SMUTS ASKS NEW WAR SETTLEMENT Appeals-for World Conference to Undo Mischief Wrought at Versailles. By the Associated Press. LONDON, October 24.—Premier Smuts of South Africa called for a conference of the powe: to consider the whole European situation in a speech last night at a dinner at- tended by the South African delega- tion to the imperial conference. He atticked France for her policy and warned England and the United States against any “excessive generosity” in the remission of interallied war debts GREEK REVOLUTION QUICKLY PUT DOWN By the Associated Press. ATHENS, October 24—While the revolutionary movement inaugurated Monday uider the royalist Gen. Metaxas is declared in government quarters to have been suppressed in virtually all the important centers, insurgent forces are still holding out in the Peloponnesus. Government airplanes today flew over the insurgent centers and dropped leaflets saying that if the in surgents did not surrender the gov ernment would use every means power to quell the moveme It was not without fighting, how ever, that the government for were able to break the revolt. Amon the more important engagements was one near Chaleis, where one of conflict with regular troops under Gen. Othonaios. Of the 1,400 muti- neers, 800 were captured. The ex- tent of the casualties is not yet known. It was announced officially that the mutineers at Schismatari had fled northward, deserting their, lead- ers. The same communique con- firmed the dispersal of a_ group of mutineers at Katerina and the cap- ture of their officers, The latest news from Saloniki says the mutineers under Col. Ziras have been dispersed and that Ziras has fled. Gen. Othonaios has wired the gov- ernment from Saloniki that he is able to place as many troops at the dis- posal of the government as may be required. This is inferpreted here as meaning the revolutionary movement in_Macedonia has collapsed. Col. Plastiras, who headed the revo- lution which resulted in the over- throw of King Constantine, said that | he considered the uprising in Mace- | donia ended and that he believed it vould break down in a few days in oponnesus. The Peloponnesus and Corinth canals’ will be completely ; | blockaded. The municipal councils of Athens and Piraeus passed resolutions con- demning the mutiny and expressing confidence in the government. According to an official communique the existence of the Metaxas move- ment had been known for some time. On Saturday evening last the prefect of police requested authority to arrest agents of Gen. Metaxas who were sald to have tried to bribe an army lieu- tenant by offering him 80,000 drach- mas. The arrests were postponed be- cause the Greek government hoped the officials would refuse to be in- fluenced by the Metaxas agents.
