g - WHOLE STOGKLIST TURNS DOWN HIL General Selling Partially Due[ to Latest Moves in Ger- man Situation. BY STUART P. WEST. Bpectal Dispateh to The Star. NEW YORK, Octoher 23.—The stock market started In today with weak- .88 cropping out in one group after @nbther until pretty much the whole ilst was involved in the selling, adejines, while general, were very ir- regular:: In over half the list they were comparativély small. g Rall Issues Break Eirst. . Rallwy shares were ‘the' first to succumb, and the leaders of the de- cliné were the same as they have been | om every occasion lately when rails have beén going down. Northern Pa- cific was particularly vulnerable unti it got.around its low of 50, when it met With some support. The samé was true of Great North- ern pfefecred. Both roads are in o strong enoukh financial pesition to warrant drawing ugon surplus ac- count to make up deficits in current varnings. How long they would ke up such & policy is a question. Mu of the recent selling, however, wen inspired by the reasoning t ihey are not as safe for perman investment as other stocks of simil. yield and selling price; Coppers Join Slump. Copper shares always sell on development suggesting further tallment of the German necott broke through 32 for the first time gnd Anaconda, American Smelt- ing alld Inspiration were all down at or close to their low. points. Chile Copper stock was steadier tl the rest. The regular quarterly dividend of 621 cents a snaré was declared today. Heuvy selling of the Central Leath- er stocks down to mach the lowest yet reached both preceded and fol- wed the publication of the figures r the third quarter, which made an even worse showing than the street was prepared for. There was a defi- of $3,526,034 after taxes as against a deficit of $79,63 ond quarter and a surplus 7 in the first quarter, when the boot nd shoe industry was doing fts record At Lowest Levels of Year. New low records were ma Tnited States Rubber first preferred, vhich sold on a 10 pér cent basis, and Goodrich preferred again broke &8 tubber common was heavily sold be- 33. International Paper also ade u new low, breaking 30 for the tirst time. Numerous weak points were brought out in specialties which were the ob- Ject of pool actlvity early in the year, and in which presumably there was stale pool accounts to be liquidated. Among these were Packard Motors, which_got down under 10; Vivaudon and Owens Bottle. Famous Players was another specialty to break, American Agriculture Chemical offered down on large transactions. Sterling Exchange Drops, Another sharp fall In sterling ex- change, further weakness in the con- tinental currencies and a sagging of French government bonds in the mar- kets, both abroad and at home, were incidents of more importance in the | financial thing happening on change. That there was ady connection tween these movements and the cline of stocks was doubtful. sounded plausible to attribute selling in the stock market to the disorders in Germany and their re- action upon the exchanges. But, as a matter of fact, such occurrences have too frequently been ignored In the Wall street movement for it to be as- sumed that they were much of an in- fluence today. The further decline in_ continental rates and the heaviness' in French bonds were a plain indication that the international markets view the separatist movement in Germany as another blow at the already dwin- dling chances of collecting the war bills. Goodyear Financing Talk. Several months ago there was some talk of the retirement by Februar: 1924, of an additional amount of Goodyear prior preference stock. It situation today than any the stock ex be- de- It the was announced in January that over | 39,000,000 more of this stock out- standing would be retired, leaving 320,000,000. Then midway through the' year it was reported that' plans ré being made to reduce this ount to $16.000,000 by the end of 1923. Apparently, however, these “pins went a-glimmering with the unbatisfactory turn injthe rubber and ~4tige situation. . The question now is e Goodyear will consider it Sty e Dreferesics e ‘-vmi:”‘ ths. Barplin over 1933, are DOt 88 large as ex- Aftted Ohemical Weak. - Further liquidation occurred in Al- lied Chemical and Dye stock, which was Dot surprising In view of the prevailing feeling that as a $4 divi- dend payer this stock was selling out of Hne. Time and again reports were current that Allled Chemical would increase the dividend to $5 or 36, but with the declaration on each occasion of only the regular $4 rate, disappointed holders unloaded their stock. Little has been heard about the business of the company recently, except that the present dividend is being satisfactorily covered, with some. thing to spare. Closing Prices Firmer. At no time was there any general weakness. The speculative leaders went down & point or more as the weak spots were uncovered in spe- clal stocks. But in the afternoon prices hardened again on the strength shown by the chain store and de- partment stocks, the tobaccos and the shares of the edectric companies, The high-priced Woolworth _ and Kresge, General Electric and West- inghouse and Tobacco Product were the late afternoon features. lway shares continued sluggish through ~the late afternoon, with little disposition to rally. This was the more remarkable after the excel- lent September report of the Union Paclfic, eWowing a gain of $2,500,000 in Union Pacific's gross over August 1 end a net operating income exceed- ing that of August by $2.400,000. SOME STRONG RALLIES. Selling Movement Checked in Late Market Trading. By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, October 23.—Alternate periods of weakness and strength char- acterized today's quiet stock market with the general tendency toward lower levels, Speculators for the decline again succeeded In forcing sharp recessions | a number of the rubber and leather shares, while the general list was in- clined ‘to yleld in sympathy with the weakness ‘of the forelgn . exchanges. Sales approximated 550,000 shares. The closing was irregular. Revival of the demand for tobacco and mer- chandlsing issues in the late -dealings checked the selling movement in other qu;l;‘rters, and there were some strong zallies. LONDON AUCTION OPEN. Rails Also Up—French Issues Reactionary. BY GEORGE T. HUGHES. Spectal Dispateh to The Star. NEW YORK, October 23.—The bomi ‘market held surprisingly well today, considering the weakness In stocks. Some of the forelgn bonds, principally French issues, reacted, and there was heaviness here and there In the rail- way list, as well as in certain special- ties, but the high-grade and the good second-grade bonds were well taken whenever -sellers offered any conces- stons. - s All the United States government loans were firm to strong, with the greatest activity In the old liberty 4%s. This was a perfectly natural development resulting from the con- tinuing ease in the money market. It is possible that buying for the ac- count of the British treasury may be in progress. Firmness also was the ru in the high-grade rails and industrials, with only a few excep- tions, one of which seemed to be Reading gencral 45, Forelgn Loaxes Small. Interest attached to the action of the foreign bonds because of the in- creasing serlousness of the news from Germany and the weakness in franc exchange. Both French 8s and 7%s opened fractionally Jower, but again today the noteworthy feature was that the losses were 8o small. French cities 6s fluctuated over a wide range, the Clty of Lyons issue varying a point between sales, but the net re- sult was a loss of something over.a point. Belgium bonds resisted the selling very well. Otherwise the for- elgn list was dull and little changed except for some further reaction in Mexican issues Domestic Moves Uneven. Among speculative domestic is- sues Hudeon and Manhattan incomes and Third Avenuo adjustments con- tinued the movement in opposite di- rections, which was such a prominent foature of the market Monday. The Hudson and Manhattan lssue got above 59 and the Third Avenue bond below 42, Dealings in both were comparatively heavy. New York Rallways refunding s dropped back almost to the point where they were before the reorganization plan was announced. Thero were small recessions in United States Rubber 58 and 7%s, doubtless in sympathy with the de- cline in the common and the pre- ferred stocks. The 7%s made a new low for the year. The low point for the 58 up to today was 84. The 55 are secured by first mortgage on all the corporation’s proverty and are selling to yield more than 6 per cent. The 7 , which mature in 1920 and are non-callabie, are secured by deposit of first and refunding 68 fs- sued under the same mortgage as the 6s. The 7%s sell to yleld more than 6% per cent. Both these bonds are generally considered sound Invest- ments. Kelly-Springfield 8s. another rubber issue, were weak, but there was a sharp run-up in Pierce-Arrow 8s. Raflroad List Unsettled. In the railroad list all the Northern | Pacific obligations were heavy, while the St. Paul bonds moved irregularly. Seaboard Alr Line adjustments also went lower. Declsive movement in these bonds probably awaits publica- tion of the September earnings state- ment. DECEMBER COTTON AT 30-CENT LEVEL | Frost Reports Cause Sharp Ad- vances in Both Big Markets.
