REAL - STAINS TRANSFORM CHEAPER W00DS Birch and Gum Can Be Made to Look Like Walnut or Mahogany. By all odds the most popular woods for interior trim today are birch and gum, says the National Builder, the former from protracted demands is advancing into the ranks of scarcer woods, but up to the present it is sharing with gum an equal prefer- ence. While in themselves they offer an excellent base for enamel and may be properly treated, if there is a definite desire for a finish both can be stained to such faithful imitations of genuine mahogany or walnut that it seems & travesty to treat them otherwise. Not only do they take all reddish \or brownish stains effectively, but in many cases it would require the eye of an expert to differentiate these from the more expensive woods above mentioned. With modern furniture running almost 90 per cent to brown ma- hogany and Italian or American wal- nut, birch and gum properiy finished offer a most inviting and harmonious background. Poplar, poor runs of pine, fir and cypress, are, from every point of view, best done in enamel or paint. Not that they necessarily offer the best an- chorage, but a good painter can over- | - come this sucgessfully and the natur- ally unattractive figure, holding out little possibility of beauty with stain is hidden by the lustrous shcen of enamel and made to appear rich and decorative. BRITAIN DISCLAIMS WRANGEL SEIZURE|| By the Associated Press. MOSCOW, September 8.—In reply to the note sent by Foreign Minister Techitcherin to Great Britain protest- || Ing against the raising of the British flag on Wrangel Island by an expe- dition of Vilhjalmur Stefansson, the explorer, Great Britain has informed || Russia that the expedi¥ion was a pri- vate affair, organized by Stefansson, and that it does not touch the ques- tion of Russia's sovereign rights over the island However, any attempt by Russia to hamper the work of the expedition, British note saye, would be viewed t_Britain with the utmost vity. In a reply to Great Britain, M. Tchitecherin accepts the explana- tion. The first principle of a piece of good furniture is its successful perform- ance of duty for which it is intended.
