N\ N \ Billionth of Crystal’s Weight ProvesEinstein Probably Right Scientist Conducts| Fine Balancing Tests Here. Dr. Paul R. Heyl, expert physicist Bt the United States bureau of stand- ards, is just completing the most exhaustive crystal welght ex- periments ever made by scientists, has failed to disprove the Einstein theory of relativity. The results mean that the theory must stand, he says, e other scientist is able by some simpler method to prove It Wrong.| Dr. Heyl's egxperiments are flve eixths finished. He is covering all of the six crystalline systems. taking one or two crystals from each. So far he finds Einstein may have hewn | ® ilttle nearer to the line than New- | ton who One Part in Blllion. Here he oalls attention to the outer ends of the controlling rods, which are built into a pillar of bricks so they will be absplutely motionless. He then takes a key and unlocks the door into a room about the size of a small closet. Through the telescope the pointer is watched and its final stopping place recorded. “The tion challenges the ome respécts,” Einsteln _theory of gravita- Newtonian theory s Dr. Heyl. “The expectation that a ervstal will not vary in weight, no | matter whether its axis is vertical or horizontal to the axis of the earth differences were implied under Newton theory. This I can- not do."” Einstein once said only twelve men in the world understéod his theory. But Dr. Heyl does not admit being one of he twelve. “That may have been true when Dr. Iinstein made the assertion,” said, “but a great many scientists and it now.” may be number one, five or e in the list, or perhaps number At any rate, he admits he was 'h taken with the theory at the Zirkin Furs Foremost for their re- liability and depend- ability. 'And he has done 5o through tests seven times closer than have ever been made before. Previous tests have been performed.on a weight difference of seven parts in a billlon instead of one part. What does it mean in evervday life that the Einsteln theory must stand? Dr. Heyl says it means very little. After all, it is only a theory, and such theories "have little to do with the realities of life. It will not change the price of wheat or flour. The dry law, the farm bloc, the price of fail clothing, the tumble in stocks, the drop in gasoline and the future of the raliroads will still be discussed. Dr. Heyl has been flooded with let- ters from scientists from all over the country asking for information about his experiments. For some reason many sclentists appear to be very anxious that Dr. Einstein’s theory should be exploded. Some have said 50 in their letters. But it is not go- b THE EVENING STAR, WASHINGTON, g to be torn asunder in the bure nl ltlhfl‘rfl Dr, Einstein thought up the gravity formula, while getting $4.500 & year in a Berlin institution much like the Carnegie Institution i Washington.
