PEORIA, IIl, July 13.—As the re- sult of what is thought by police to be an “inside” attempt to raid the Old Majestic Distillery here, Jake Szold, night watchman, is dead, and Mike Hunt, another watchman, Is beld for questioning. Szold was shot through the stom- ach in an attempt to rescue Hunt, presumably attacked by four bandits at midnight last night. According to Hunt's story, he was seized by the four meninear the entrance to the distillery, his hands were bound and he was beaten into unconsclous- ness. He claimed he heard mo shot, but police think that Szold, in run- ning to Hunt's aid, was fired on by the thieves. Aroused by the firlng, August Lewandowski. another watchman, ran up and opencd fire on the four men, who fled toward the river. Lewan- dowski discovered the body of Szold and notified the police. Police say they doubt Hunt's story of being beaten insensible. An ex amination by Dr. Milo Easton r vealed no bruises.
