AIRY IMPORTANCE EXPLAINED TO CLUB Californian Addresses Rotary on Problems of American Farmers. Stressing the immense dairy prod- ucts output of the United States and giving statistics to show the im- portance they bear to the health of the people, Dean Van Norman of the University of California addressed members of the Kiwanis Club at their weekly meeting in the Hotel ‘Washington yesterday. The educator is president of the World's Dairy Congress, which will hold a conven- tion here October 2 and 3. Dean Van Norman attributed the present discontent among the agri- culturists of the country to a lack of co-operation between the farm- er and the city business, man and made a ng appeal for the two to get together. Importance of Farmer. He gave figures to show that there are more than 4.000,000 fa United States creating s $2.500,000,000 of new weal that ‘while much is steel industry, few realize the tre. mendous importance farm products play in the life of the nation. It 18 essential for the producer a; tributor to interests bette 'y modern efficfency in farm implements, the speaker said he was not worried over the exodus from the country to citles by so many. Congratulates Club. Claude Owen presided and con- gratulated the club and the commit- tee in charge of the details for the completion of the two buildings glyen Camp Good Will by Klwanis. The club indorsed a movement to be carried out during the ensuing vear, in which local Kiwanis will award a medal to the Washingtonian who, in the judgment of a specially selected committee, has done the best individual service for the community during the twelve months. John J. E announced details for the entertainment next Thursday, when the club will be the guest of Andrew Loffler at his home home, on the Benning road. Members are re- quested to meet at 11th street and New York avenue on that day at 4:30 o'clock, where automobiles will be waiting to convey the party to its destination. To make the event more homelike, Fred Cohen, head walter at the Hotel Washington, and his assistants will accompany’ Kiwanians to the Loffler place be_in charge of the service Marion Wise, chairman of the committee, tournament would be e and golf golf the announced the July held at recently T John A. George Greer, local agent of the Glenarden Development Company of Baltimore, Md., charged with misap- propriation of funds of that concern, was arraigned yesterday in the United States branch of Police Court hefore Judge John P. The daily crimes present a frightful story; the robbers steal the plunk and wheel, the slayers’ hands are gory. The sinful cranks are robbing banks, they're using guns and axes; the crime wave rolls and. daunts our souls, as greater still it waxes. Each day I read of deadly deed, of cold and clammy bodies knocked out by wights who spend their nights con- suming bootleg toddies. The baffled cop can't make crime stop as up the town he sallies; and thieves and yeggs on busy legs are sprinting through the alleys. And toughs and bums infest the slums and kidnaped maids are squealing; news I must peruse, it keeps my senses reeling! 1 read these tales, my spirit quails, while yet the wave advances; and it seems queer that year by year no evil to me chances. No robbers meet me on the street and tell me to deliver; no bandits bold bear off my gold ‘or steal my priceless flivver.” My skull’s intact, it’s not been whacked with black- jack or with bludgeon; I've not been shot by gunmen hot, or other grim curmudgeon. I stay at home, I do not roam by night in darkened 1 places; home life enchants when one has_aunts with many charms and graces. I read my book and josh the cook and play a game of check- ers, and so avoid the grait employed by slayers, thieves and wreckers. (Copyright) ~ WALT MASON. ‘RETIRED U. S. WORKER TAKES HIS OWN LIFE E.
