- MORSE DEFENDANT OUTLINES TROUBLES Gays Fleet Corporation De- lays Made Ship Work Difficult. Rupert M. Much, one of the elght defendants in the Morse consplracy trial, resumed today his testimony and outlined the ~difficulties en- countered by the Morses in securing payments of money due them from the Fleet Corporation. He declared that on one occasion when he visited Chief Auditor Overend of the Ship- ping Board to get the weekly pay roll for the men at the yard Overend said it made no difference to him if the company were forced into bank- ruptey. At that time, according to the Virginia company's books the Fleet Corporation was indebted to it in the extent of $1,000,000, the wit- ness stated. Much said he was frequently re- quired to wait outside Mr. Overend's office from 9 o'clock in the morning until late in the afternoon for his pay roll check, when representatives of “other ship concerns were waited on ahead of him The result of these delays, the wit- ness said, was the inability of the company to meet freight charges and the loss mot only of the use of the material but of demurrage. At one time there were 150 cars on the tracks of the Southern railway held on demurrage, asserted. Explains Confession. Home cooked. 1923. The closing of the First State Bank of Shelby, another institution amli- ated with the Stanton Bank, already had been announced. Mr. Skelton returned today from Great Falls, where he took charge of the Stanton Bank, and from Shelby, where the affairs of the Shelby insti- tution wee placed in his hands. He | stated that the Joplin bank had closed presumably as a result of the fallure of the Great Falls bunk. The Joplin bank has deposits of about #40,000 and 1 oapitatized at $20,000. Examiner Skelton said he 18 fo: bidden by law to make any stat ments with reference to the condition of a bank placed in his hands. He sald he would make a report to Gov. Joseph M. Dixon, probably within & week, and in that report probably would say whether in his opinion re- | ceivers are necessary for the three banks or whether reorganization and Baked Smoked Ham Home Cooked—No BONE 75c Sliced 65c whole or half hams. for camping, motoring.
