14 TRADE SHOWS DROP IN BRICK ORDERS Recession in Building Activi- ties Believed Seasonal to Large Extent. REAL It is a question whether the publicity itself, emanating from an eastern organization, or the ‘condition against which the publicity was directed, is re- sponsible for a slight recession in new building operations. Current reports from brick manufacturers from all parts of the country show that there is a gen eral decrease in orders on books. Only two districts show gains over the pre- vious month and all the others are from 25 per cent to 50 per cent below the May 1 record The Tilinois, Indlana and Wisconsin district, influenced very largely by figures from Chicago, show that orders on books have been in- creased by 15,000,000 brick since the IES( Digest was issued a month ago. Ne- braska, lowa, Kansas and Missour! also report an increase in orders. The latter states were among the last to show evidences of the building tide of the present year. PROTECTING HOMES FROM FIRE DANGER Builders See Need of Stop- ping Up Flues Created by Vacant Spaces. More and more home builders are coming to see the importance of provid- Ing their homes with fire-stopping ar- rangements. The purpose of fire stop- pIng 18 to cut off the vertical flues in a building, which are made by the open spaces between framing members, espe- clally studs. If these places are stopped at the bottom with material which will not burn a fire will not get into the fiues or ducts and thus create a blaze be- tween structural members. The principle does not call for mak- ing the wood less Inflammable but for restricting a fire to definite limits, where it can be controlled to some extent un- til the fire department comes. One of the best ways to avold fire in the home is to be careful that no trash, waste paper or other rubbish accumu- lates in the basement, closets or attic. Laundry should never be hung on elec- tric wirings or over the kitchen range. The waste occasioned by fires within American homes is appalling. A special organization, the National Board ofi Fire Underwriters, has been set up to reduce this waste. The organization strongly recommends that fire-stopping be used in all frame bulidings.
