MARY GROVES, | DIES AT AGE OF 86 i | Widow of Southwest Business Man | and’ Native of Capital Long IlL Mrs. Mary Jane Groves, widow of Samuel Groves, a well known south- west business man, who died in 1913 at the age of eighty-six years. died | Monday at her home, 618 L street southwest, following a long illness. She was the same age as her hus- band. The funeral services were held at Mo fauiiy residence this afternoon ! at 2 o'clock, Rev. Dr. Tolson, pastor of the Westminster Presbyterian Church, of which Mrs. Groves had been long a communicant, .officitine, The interment was in the old family plot in Congressional cemetery. Mrs. Groves was a native of this City and a daughter of William Cox, one of the early mayors of Washing- ton, and one of the oldest and best known familles of his time. For a while Mr. and Mrs. Groves made thelr home in Leonardtown and Charles county, Md. The family have made their home in Washington_for the past thirty-two years. Mrs, Groves was well known among the older citizens of the city, and particu- larly was she well known in the southwestern section of the city, where she long made her home. The palibearers, made up of old friends of the family, were: Emil Spahn, James Jones, Willlam Holmes and Charles Orfutt. Mrs. Groves is survived by children—Willlam Groves, Walter Groves, John —Groves, Mrs. Alice Weeks, Mrs. John Shipman, Mrs. Eliz- abeth Turner, all of this city, and Benjamin Groves of Baltimore, and elght grandchildren and eight great- grandchildren, ———— JOHN C. HOUK BURIED AT TENNESSEE HOME John Chiles Houk, five times state senator of Tennessee and for many years prominent in republican poli- tics and representative for two terms to the national Congress, who died at Fountain City, Tenn., last Sunday, was buried Tuesday at Harvey Heights, Island Park, Tenn. Senator Houk, who was sixt rs old, was considered the “stormy " of state republican politics He was recosnized as a master in organization and led the progressive fight in Tennessee for the late Theo- dore Roosevelt. He was born in Clinton, Tenn.. in 1860. He graduated from the Uni- versity of Tennessee and was admit- ted to the bar in 1884 From 1891 to 1895 he represented the second Ten- nessce district in Washington. Sen- seven lator Houk wrote the first state piat- form declaration for woman suffrage —the progressive platform of 1912. He was an ‘gdent lover of nature and an expert in base hall, duck hunting and fishing. Senator Houk was married in 1885 to Miss Minnie Young, daughter of Judge D. K. Young of that state. He leaves his widow, one daughter, Mrs. William V. Deaderick; three brothers, Edward S. Houk of Knoxville, Willlam C. Houk of this city, Lincoln C. Houk of Knoxville: one sister, Mrs. L.
