RAILROADS ALLOWED TO MAKE NEW RATES Special Permission Given Lines North and South, West of Missisaippi. Rallroads operating north and | south lines west of the Mississippl river were authorized today by an Interstate -Commerce Commission de: cision to make rates between St. Louts, Memphis, Vicksburg, and other Mississippi river crossing points, in- cluding New Orleans, without regard- ing the long and short haul clause of theé Interstate Commerce act. The effect of the decision will be to allow lower rates in the transporta- tion of general freight between the points named than are allowed on similar shipments to and from inter- mediate points, even though the haul to the intermediate points may be shorter than to the river cities named. Lines operating ‘morth and south, but located on the east side of the Mississippi river have already been nuthorized to maintain such a rate adjustment, the commission’s decis- fon sald, with & result that all of the trafic has besn diverted from the side lines. o long and short haul provision of the commerce act forbids a rail- No appliance in the home is more frequently a source of satis- Investing in a New Range ays dividends for many - years in increased comfort, a cooler kitchen, improved cooking and a saving in time, fuel and labor. faction—or dissatisfaction—because no other appliance is as fre- quently needed.
