The great ocean steamer was gpeeding fast as steam could carry her to New York! Great. glorious New York! The Alpha and Omega of his hopes and dreams. The first face Jil-Bett saw as she was taken mbroad the steamer was that of the stewardess of the other t. PO b, vou dear little .lamb" she oried, seizing Jil-Bett and cuddliing her close to her heart, “1 was so wor- ried about vou, until T saw you fi one of the boats. How well vou have stood the terrible exverience. She changed her opinion the next moment, noticing how white and Il Jil-Bett looked. She had intended questioning her as to how she reach- ed the deck and had been rescued, but saw the girl was not equal to * pecounting what had taken place. During the next two days Jil-Bett was too weak to leave her couch. The stewardess was extremely indig- nant that her young husband did not inquire if she were well or {ll: in fact, it seemed aw if he had quite forgotten her existence. The actual fact was. he had made rapeated inquiries of ons of the cabin maids asking if she were well enough to eec him on deck. The maid did not take the trouble to make inquiry. but gave him the glib answer: the voung girl was entirely recovered from the shock she had undergone. but there was no mentlan as to whether or not she would see him. During this time on shipboard he paced to and fro, doing his best to control his conflicting thoughts and emotions. He tried to analyze what Cairena’ attitude toward him would be when he explained all. Then, like & heavy load sliding down and lying on his heart, what his attitude toward the girl who was to have become his bride should be in the face of the complication which engulfed him. First and foremost. he must con- fer with Jil-Bett and come to mome sort of an understanding with her, a8 to whether or no they could, come to an amicable settlement of the tangle. “Every woman has her price in such affairs. Jil-Bett shall name her own figure as to how she will accept to_break the clutch which binds us. He felt that she was not the kind of girl to decide to hold him, now that she understood the case, inas. much as this marriage had been the yresult of a mistake of judgment on the part of her crazed grandfather. ‘That she cared for him, he had ne doubt, but unfed tendermess would moon wear itself out. She would for- met, him. With freedom and wealth at 'her command, she ‘would in all probability meet some other man who would love her, and whom she might love, and she would realize that the arrangement she had made with him was indeed for the best. On the contrary, if she decided she would not set him free, it would re- sult in a lifetime of bitterness for both, for his heart was with Clair- ena. Then he fell to wondering what Clairena had thought and done when the wireless message was received, He wondered, too, if they had learned of the disaster which had sent it to the bottom of the sea, and if they were awaiting tidings of his rescue. To assure them, he sent a second message to Col. Vall, notifying them of_this faot. He marveled much, as the hours went by, that he did not receive a reply. As time grew shorter on shipboard, he made up his mind that Jil-Bétt must see him. He could not bear the suspense of not know- ing what she intended to do any longer. Stifiing his conscience, he wrote a little note to this effect to Jil-Bett, urging her see him. This he sent by another maid, who returned with there was no reply. He imself with annoyance. There was another thought that ‘What if Clairena accompanied her father down to the pler to meet him—which she was almost sure to do—and saw Jil-Bett? He must find some way to avold that. ‘When it came to the last evening on shipboard he could scarcely con- trol his great impatience. For hours he had been pacing the deck, busy with his conflicting thoughts. He knew Jil-Bett was not like other girls. Perhaps she had the notion to dash ashere, the instant the gan, plank was lowered, hiding herself forever beyond all possibility of find- ing her. inst anything of that To guard kbfi mmho ‘précaution, to pay med Love Story. 5 | was to see that' passengers alighted in safety to stop and hold Jil-Bett should she ‘attempt to go. ashore without him. She would have -turned vanishing - within, but he was ‘too quick for her:” With & bound, he was at her side, Bélzed Ber wrist, drawing her resolutely out on deck. ~~~ Taking her arm, he conducted her to the farthest end of the deck, that their conversation might not be over- heard. 5 {_He placed a seat for her, but Jil- Bett declined it, For some moments they stood to- tgether in silence, neither looking at the other. For some moments they stood by the rafl in silence. Jil-Bett's dark eyes were looking wistfully out over the wide sweep of the moon-spangled waters, Ten thousand stars were in the sky, ten thousand in the sea. | He was wondering in what words {ne should broach the subject so near his heart. How this last week had changed her. Was this superb young girl standing before him with the cold, haughty mien of an empres the confiding child Jil-Bett. who had 80 lately clung to him in far-off Katar with kisses and tears? The other Jil-Bett had vanithed for- ever; this one seemed so different S!!e made no attempt to break the silence, but stood looking out upon the water as though she had for gotten his presence. He had expected a flerce scene when he broached the subjeet that lay so heavily on his heart. At length he turned to_her. “I have had plenty of time to think | during these last few days. Jil-Bett.” he began, slowly, “and 1 want to a sure you the outcome of it you will consider fairness itself to yvou She made him no answer, and_he went on constrainedly: “You realize our marriage was not a union of hearts, but of hands, brought about through the force of distressing cir- cumstances, Jil-Bett's dark eves still looked out to sea: .she made no effort to reply. | to check the bitter recriminations he | was uttering. ‘As_there is no love between us, | nor has there ever been. the step I am about to propose will not be a hardship to you to take.
