VOLENT DECLN INOLSHARES Gt in Crude Prices Finds 'WaII Street Unprepared. Rest of List Unsettled. ' i BY STUART P. WEST Speciat Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, April 1l—Another yiolent decline in the oil shares was the feature of today's market, Wall street had not bee prepared for the Z5-cent reduction announced in Pennsylvania and the 33 per cent cut In Kentucky crude oil prices, and here was o rush to unload these stocks which broke ~down all re- sistance. Sentiment regarding the oil trade seemed to have undergone w reversal over night. Instead of the optimistic talk regarding the earnings of these companies, everybody was speaking about over production and Increasing competition ¥ The greatest losses in the oil groun were sustained by Houston and Cali- fornia Petroleum, the two which have had the largest advance. But the sell- ing was auite as urgent in Marland Ofl, Cosden, Producers and Refiners, Phil- lips Petroleum and Skelly. Other Shares Under Pressure. The extreme weakness in the oils necessarily afforded a rather severe test for the market as a whole. Un- der this test parts of the list stood up well and others not. 1 One of the best xupported sections was the sugar stocks, and here the developments of the day were distinet- iv bullish, including a further rise to :w_hizh levels in sugar prices and resh confirmation of the lowered es- timates of the new Cuban crop. During the greater part of the time the steel shares did well as com- pared with other groups, and so did most of the rails. Tobaceo Products issues acted in a manner to bear out reports, belleved to be trustworthy, that new Interests have entered the market in these stocks. Today's Financial Review. The stock market today held the center of the financial stage and the whole story of the market centered cduction in oil prices in the civania and Kentucky districts and the consequent break in the oil shares. This episode. however, was much more important as an Immediate fac- tor speculative calculations than {t was as a consideration bearing upon general business conditions, It has long been known that oil production on the Pacific coast was excessive and the cut in prices an- nounced Tuesday by Standard Oil « Calffornia occasioned no surprise. But it did never the less constitute a threat of increasing competition for the ofl producers east of the Rock mountains and _this undoubtedly was recognized In the action of the Penn- sylvania and Kentucky oil interests today. At the same time while there is such overproduction in ofl fields as exists in the California region, it is a fact that recently output has got ahead of demand and the price cut announced today had the additional purpose of correcting this condition before it became ro Wall Street Features. Martin Parry directors next week are expected to increase the dividend om the present $2 rate to $3 annu- ally.
