Main 5280 - Smart Sport Coats $ 8 .90 In the stylish Sport THE EVENING A million men at the front would consume thirty million pounds a day In food and stores, Army statistics in- dicate. American expeditionary force experience indicates that thirty pounds per man per day is the ab- solute minimum and allows nothing for storing up reserve stocks in the dumps for use in offensives. The figures came up during recent caleulations as to train operating per- sonnel necessary to handle the flow of materials to the front. It was es- timated that a single field army would require the movement of 6,000 tons a day of supplies of all Kinds, exclusive of concentrations of stores and equipment for a contemplated major operation. In other words, raflways to the front for this one army must be prepared to handle twelve trains daily each day. 600 in Railway Battalion. An army rallway battalion is ap- proximately 600 men strong. It in- cludes personnel necessary for the operation of six trains a day, from train crew to right-of-way and equipment malintenance forces, over one engine division of trackage, or about 100 miles of road. At & pinch, a battalion might han- dle nine trains a day, but to be se- eure in preparing to handle a twelve- train schiedule behind a field army the experts hold that it would be nece: sary to put in two railway battalio per 100 miles of road to the front. With that organization the railw troops for a limited period could h: dle eighteen trains a d mated, and assuming t front is 300 mile Cloths, designed with a swagger that is distinc- tive. Under the new plan of bullding up in the Organized Reserve the com- plete framework of rallway operating battalions from the personnel of the y systems, forty-four existing rafl Bven in of these units are avallable. the event that all were called sud- denly into service, however, it is be- lleved at the War Department that there would be no serfous impairment of the operating forces of the rail- roads, as not more than 5 per cent of the operating personnel would be in- volved. The number of rallway em- ployes of necessary skill ‘and expé- rience is so great that double that number could be withdrawn, it {s es- timated, without tying up the roads, particularly under the new plan which allots a reserve battalion to about each 2,000 miles of each system. _———————— CHOICE FOR U.
