t “THE ' EVENING STAR, WASHINGTON. . €., THURSDAY, MARCH 15, 1923. Huge Bombs, Droppe lcarred and shaken by violent explo- ions of 300-pound TNT bombs, drop- ed by Army aviators from an altitude ¢ 2,000 feet, the dangerous five-mile ce jam on the Delaware river, which has threatened this town with disas- er, 1s still intact. | The flood menace, however, is be- lieved to have been temporarily re- ‘nmved. for although winter scored a triumph against one of war's modern + implements of destruction, the river is falling and a heavy thaw is now the only danger. Seven Bombs Dropped. Guided by bonfires built on the ice at the most likely valnerable points, two large Martin bombing planes from Aberdeen Fleld, each carrying four men and four bombs, began the attack. Thousands of residents in New York, New Jersey and Pennsyl- vania gathered in the.vicinity where the three states adjoin and saw the spectacle. 3 Seven bombs were dropped at in- tervals of twenty minutes, four tear- ing great cavities in the ice six feet deep. The other three landed on the New Jersey shore. throwing up clouds of earth and snow. One of the hombs striki: endangered @ group of STANDARD SOAPS Woodbury's Jfor .. Flying frag- ments whistled past them, but no one was hurt. ‘The danger zone lies between the Pennsylvania and New Jersey shores about five miles out of Port Jervis, where a_similar situation arose in March, 1904, and the town was flood- ed, causing thousands of dollars damage. One Flyer Falls. Mayor Rutan, fearing & recurrence, induced Representative Hamilton Fish to get the War Department's permis- sion for use of the bombers, which failed today in an effort to break the orge. Lieut. Phillips Melville, who made a survey of the jam, was to have met the bombers, but his own machine had a mishap. He was unhurt, but the craft was caught in a fleid of slush, overturned by the strong wind | d: and damaged. ARREST PERSHING DRIVER. NEW YORK, March 15.—Fred H.
