Speelal Dispateh to The Star. NEW ¥ORK, Webruary 23.—The professional view of today's stock market was that the pools had been taken aback by the action of the re- serve bank, vet were making a bold stand to discourage any general sell- ing of stocks. One set of traders was /suspicious, saying that the market was being held up by main force, while another set laid stress upon the point that stocks could not have been distributed in any large way and behave as they did today. W happened was that after an uncertain opening and some decline Quriug the first hour, a dozen or S0 of the speculative leaders were taken in hand and bid up. This maneuver had a steadying e upon the rest of the list, but was not sufficient to restore the buoyancy of the early part of the week Sugar Stocks Prominent. Following another rise in the price of raw sugar and a corresponding advance in refined, the sugar stocks came in for_attention again. S American Wool made a new high, parily as the result of favorable esti- mates regarding earnings and partly in consequence of the announcement that three more of the principal lines of fall goods had been oversold and withdrawn from the market When it came to turning prices upward after the early period of un- settlement it was stocks like Stude- baker, American Can and Amer] Locomotive—all of them casy to con- trol—that. were selected as the leader: Those who were active last week in passing out information regarding at least a $6 dividend rate on Guif States Steel said today that the §1 quarterly dividend deelared last Wednesday meant to them that the rate would be increased at the next meeting to $1.50 quarterly and at the Meeting six months hence to_at least $2 quarterl and perhaps 50 quarterly At the same time that the $1 dividend that was declared on the common stock the board of directors set aside divi- | Balto & Ohio p dends for the entire yeam on the first|Bang & Ar'nst’k and second preferred issues. W YORK, February 2%.—Rece and frequent advances' in crude prices are greatly enlarging the plane of producers for what is expecte. today to be perhaps thc most o tensive spring and summer drilling campaign In the aistory of the in dustry. Reports from Pittsburga today s that' Pennsylvania producers cla that $4 oil fully justifies greater ex- ploration work, and with that price being paid for crude oil, plans are being made, not only for entiraly new work, but also for a great des of work in extending old flelds. Row in Market Association. Similar conditions exist In other fields than in Pennsylvania, and pipe and tubular goods makers are enjoy- ing, as a natural result, a buylng movement similar to thzt which sc extensively affected the steel market a short time ago when the railroads and the automoblle manufacturers of the country were placing large orders for delivery in the first half of this year. b From the midwest today came word that dfssatlsfaction with the Petro- leum Marketers'-Assoclation has caus- ed about forty members of that or- ganization to resign and to organize the American Oil Men's Assoclation The policy of forbidding members to do business with the Standard Oil companies resulted in the restgna- tions. Members of the newly formed assoclation include Cosden & Co. Marland Refining Company, Moore Refining Company, White Eagle Ol and Refining Company, and some of the other larger independents. New Boll Weevil Fight. Not only the south and southwest but northern and eastern manufactur- ing sections as well showed deep in- terest today In the rather startling plan of Hudson Maxim for eradicating the boll weevil through wrapping of the male pest by balting the tra with & golution or section obtalnes from the female of the species. Where there was some skepticisn shown at first glance by manufac- turers whose output is either wholl: or in parg based on the products ol the cotton fields, & complete under- standing of the plan and the.sefious- mess with which it was recelved b the. national conference at Atlanta has evidently given them cause for deep thought, according to dispatches recelved here today from such cen- ters. All indications today. point tc the fact that every encouragement financial and moral, will be given scientists in their effort to develop Hudson Maxim's plan to find: & bet- ter weapon even than is afforded in the use. of arsenic preparations for fighting the boll weevil. It was very evident today. that the Assoclation of Research, headed by Dr. Reese Hutchison, will be accord- ed sound financial aid, not only by cotton growers, but by all users of the raw material as well. Greater Car Shortage Feared. Fears of a greater car shortage thic spring are imminent ‘in certain se tions in the middle west. It was re- ported today from Clevelamd that shippers there are receiving warnings that such a condition may occur and it has somewhat hampered the move- ment of steel products and coal for more than a month. Tiremakers at Akron are steadily increasing production in anticipation of a very heavy spring trade. The Seiberling Company there, one of the youngest of the AKron companles, re- ported today that $1,000,000 in orders are on hand. January deliveries, it is sald, exceeded $500.000 and business the first week in February was 20 per cent over the company's previous best week.
