! Ljagg™ SEES AID FOR MILK PRODUCERS ON WAY Dr. Wiley Says Bills Are in Good Shape for Introduction Next Congress. MAY-TURN DISTRIBUTORS Declares Present Dealers in Wash- ington Must Insure Farmers Uniform Profit. Milk bills now before.Congress are now in such a condition that “they can be introduced profaptly in the next ‘Congress, and it is hoped that ro further hearings will, be neces- sary,” according to Dr! Harvey W. Wiley, former head of the bureau of chemistry, in &n addregs this. after- noon before the Housekeepers' Al- liance at the Art Center, 1106 Con- necticut avenue. “It is rather a sad commentary on the kind of government, which we have in the District of: Columbla to find that, after four years of agita- tion of a great agricultural problem affecting the interests of the pro- ducer, and a great health problem af- fecting the welfare of the consumers, no definite action has been accom- | plished,” Dr. Wiley declared. He con- tinued. in part, as follows: Detends Milk Producers. “In this connection 1 desire to say word on behalf of the milk pro- business is one of the sh of all agricultural pur- he business of-producing milk no night nor day, nor Sunday nor Holiday: 1t -ciaims the services of the farmer ¥nd of hfs assistants at all times and at all seasons. In storm, in snow, in ice it exacts the same faith- ful service that it requires in sun- shine and in_calm. The average dis- tance of the producer from Wash- ington is probably fifty miles, From his station the milk train leaves often hefore sun up and always so in win- ter. “When any pressure is put upon the market by. the public press oc other- wise to lower the price of milk the farmer has to bear the whole burden Tn all the reductions in price that have taken place during my recol- lection T do not recall a single in- ce in which the distributor has shared any part of the reduction with the farmer. It is easy.to imagine, iherefore, why the milk producer has been driven into organization for the protection of his legitimate interests. “It is only recently that through an act of Congress that he has been per- mitted to share with the labor unions the privilege of collective bargain- ing. That does not only mean selling. but also buying. Organization is the sole method by which farming can be put on a paving basis. Eighty-five per cent of all the milk coming into | Washingten at the present time is| produced "by the members of (hcl Maryland and Virginia Milk Pro- duce! A ciation. The association has not yet undertaken the problem of distrlhunm\ and does not propose to do o, if the dealers act fairly to- ward them and give the farmers some small share of the distributors’ uni- form profits. Forty-Five Distributors in City. ““There are now about forty-five dis- ibutors of milk in this city. Each one must have expensive cooling and Lottling establishments, distributing pasteurizing facilities and Their dis- tributing wagons cro: and recross cach others tracks in all parts of the town. If the association that pro- duces 85 per cent of the milk con- sumed in Washington should do its own distributing a grest part of this cxpense could be saved. The farmer | would get more and the consumer pay less for the milk.” 47 ALARMS IN 2 DAYS. Washington firemen have been on the go almost continuously since Sat- urday morning. answering a total of forty-seven alarms and telephone calls for help.
