ASKS CONTRIBUTIONS TO LENTEN OFFERING Episcopal Church Board Issues Ap- peal to Sunday School ‘Workers. The board of religlous education of the Episcopal Church of the diocese of Washington is issuing to Episcopal clergymen and Sunday school work- ers an urgent appeal for increased contributions to the annual children Lenten oftering, which has become & large factor In the missionary re- sources of the general church. The treasurer of the National Coun- cll of the Episcopal Church has an- nounced that Immediate retrenchment in the expenses in the missionary fleld must be adopted bedause of the fall- ing off of contributlons during the yemr 1922. In 1920 the church pro- Jected the nation-wide campaign, Wwhich greatly stimulated offerings for all Jurposes. Similar amounts wore ple for 1921 and 1922, and, in taot, the total receipts for 1931 were grester than for the previous vear lans for 1922 and 1923 werp based on the expectation that these contrl- butions would be continued, but & very considerable deficit was created in 1922 by the fallure of tho dioceses to pay thelr quotus. The dioccse of Washington was only $1,400 behind- hand, but some dioceses ran as much as $25.000 behind, it Is stated, In this crisis, while appeals will be made to the people of the church gen- erally for {ncreased donatlons, the board of religious education has de- cided that the children’s offering must also be increased. To this énd a mass meeting for all the Eplsc schools ‘in the District and ing counties will be held at Epiphany Church Sunday afternoon, March 11, at 4 o'clock. METHODIST PROTESTANT.
