By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, February 16.—The Lusk school laws, designed to eliminate radi- calism from the schools of New York state, and the so-called anti-parochial school law recently adopted in Oregon, were attacked as subversive of the con- stitutional right of free speech by the Rev. Dr. John A. Ryan, director of the National Catholic Welfare Council, in an address before the Teachers’ Unlon Auxiliary last night. “The Oregon law and the Lusk laws proceed from the same spirit and the same illiberal thinking,” Dr. Ryan said. “In Oregon, religious echools are the danger. In New York, It is the political real and of much greater magnitude than they can ever become, they should not be prohibited by such legislation as we are considering. Laws of this sort are too easily abured. The only safe rule s that which has been followed in this country since the adoption of the Constitution, namely, that which per- mits complete freedom of speech, of 7 = printing, and of teaching so long as there 18 no violation of the laws of libel or of the canons of decency.” — Mr. Bonar Law, the British premler, has confessed that in his youth he strogve hard to learn shorthand and failed completely.
