Unfinished wood sur- faces absorb grease and dirt more readily, are more likely to stain and are harder to keep clean than those in which the pores of the wood are filled with paint, oil, varnish or some other finish. Unfinished wood surfaces should be cleaned by scrubbing with the grain of the wood, using small quantities of water and a mild soap. They should be rinsed with a cloth wrung out of clear water, and should be wiped dry. If the surface cannot be o cleaned by this method, it is possi- ble to use & scourer, such as fine wool or powdered pumice. Unfin- ished wood may be bleached with oxallo acid solution, It is advisable to sweep oiled floors with a soft brush and to dust them with a dry or olled mop. Occasion- ally they may be washed and after- ward wiped with an oily mop or cloth. Water should be used spar- ingly, and care should be taken to rub the oil in well so that a surplus is not left to collect dust and to be tracked onto rugs. Varnished and shellacked surfaces should ordinarily be dusted clean with a soft brush and polished with an ofled mop or cloth moistened with a fow drops of light lubricating ofl, lemon ofl or furniture polish. In gen- eral, varnished and shellacked sur- faces should not be touched with water. However, If badly soiled. they may be wiped with a cloth wrung out of warm, slightly soapy water, wiped dry at onoe and then polished with an -olled cloth. The appearance of badly worn varnished woodwork may be improved by rubbing with a good grade of floor wax. Wazxed surfaces may be cleaned with a soft duster, or, in the case of floors, & soft brush or mop free from oil. The film of dirt and wax which darkens the surface may be removed with a cloth wrung out of warm soapy water, or, better, with one moistened with gasoline or turpen- B. L.
