- AMUSEMENTS Josef Hofmann Concert. Josef Hofmann, the master tech- mioclan of the piano and the one musi- olan who can belittie the musical term “prestissimo” by playing faster and quicker than the apparent limit of human endurance, presented a char- acteristic Hofmann program at Poli's Theater yesterday afternoon, Mr. Hofman's program yesterday did tandard of the sly, for, as in all of his concerts, he makes his final bow having performed to fhe su- porlative »n_one number that far surpa remainder of the program. erday was '« “Spanish doubtful if any to Washington give such a thrilling £ that musterpiece. NEW NATIONAL—“The Come- dian.” Lionel Atwill will appear at the New Natlonal Theater next week in “The Comedian,” a comedy of wem- peraments by Sacha Guitry, adapted by David Belasco. Unusual interest attaches to Mr. At- will's appearance here in this comedy, as it marks the third offering from the pen of this eminent French actor- author In which he has been seen un- der Mr. Belasco's direction. Local theatergoers will recall his appear- ances here in “Deburau” and “The Grand Duke.” The title role in “The Comedian” is radically different from Mr. Atwill's previous characterizations, and af- fords him the opportunity of adding another to his gallery of stage por- To support Mr. Atwill, Mr. Belasco has engaged & company of well known players, including Joseph Her- bert, A P. SHUBERT-GARRICK—“Anna Christie.” Arthur Hopkins s to present at the Shubert-Garrick next week Pauline Lord as the star in Eugene O'Nelll's play, “Anna Christie.” “Anna Christie” is the story of an erring daughter of an old Swedish sailor who has developed a great hatred and fear of the sea. Her father's hatred of all that belongs to the sea makes him oppose her union to the man she loves, and the two men have a terrible fight in which Anna intervenes. Disgusted with both of the men she bursts forth into a hectic confession of what her fifteen years of life away from her father has been. Both men leave her in utter horror, but later her lover comes back, will- ing to belleve that her sufferings have purified her soul, and, while he and her father go off on & long sail- ing ship voyage around the cape, Anna takes up her broken life and walits for them to return, hoping, per- haps, that the sea will bring her happiness at the last. Pauline Lord s said to bring to the role of Anna & depth of fire and an emotional appeal which stamps. her as one of the greatest actresses of the present day. She sweeps everything before her in the big con- fession scene, the truth and intensity of which makes the play memorable —“Sudan to Cairo.” E. M. Newman's fifth traveltalk of 1109-1111 G St. N.W.
