The Scarlet Tanager A Story of Secrst Servies and Diplomatic Intrigue BY J. AUBREY, TYSON (Copyright, 1922, by the Maemillas Company.) o(Continued From Yehterday's Star.) . CHAPTER 1V. I Getting to Work. Forsford, rising, followed Rennison and laid a hand on one of his shouldera. “Is it all clear to you?” he asked, solicitously. “Well, no—hardly that” Rennison muttered. “In fact, there is nothing clear at all. We are not sure Chan- ning was murdered—that he did not dle a natural death. His money was untouched, and It is not clear that he was robbed of anything. Your belief that he carried with him documents which held the secret of his inven- tion has led you first to‘suspect, and then to believe, that such documents were taken from him. “But they are gone, tested, excitedly. “We are not so sure of that,” Ren- nison said. “Those who searched his pockets were not looking for such papers as the ones you believed him to have in his possession. The ex- amination by Coughlin appears to have been scarcely more than per- functory—merely sufficlent to estab- 1ish identification. Then, too, the fact that nothing has been said to me concerning an examination of his lug- ®age leads me to infer that none was made. He surely brought with him @ sult case or traveling_bag of some sort.” = “The fault was mine, gcaptain, Towndrow replied, apologetic: oughlin did report that he found a black leather traveling bag on a chair in the room, but that this contained only toilet articles and wearing ap- parel. Coughlin seemed certain that it held no papers.” “It {s plain, of course, that the had been an intruder in the room, Merschon put in. “That fact is indi- cated by the disappearance of the ke Perhaps not,” sald Rennison. “Tt 18 possible that at the time Channin fell dead to the floor—from natural causes, perhaps—he was accompanied by some one who was there by his invitation—a woman, perchance, or & man. This person, though innocent of his death, might have had some quite explainable reason for dreading 0 be found in the room in the cireum- stances. We will see.” “You speak, Rennison, as if you hold & brief for the unknown person we have designated as the intruder,” Merschon said, resentful - “It's the Rennison way,” Towndrow growled. “The captain always gives 10 a suspect the benefit of the doubt. He first reasons what a fellow would have done innocently in certain cir- cumstances—what blunders he might have made. But if he finds the sus- pect had a motive—it there is evi dence, however slight, of design— good-night! The end comes quickly. Rennison gets him with the goods. What follows is the Rennison way— not mine. Rennison, marking a note of bitter- ness in the tone of the secret service man, looked at him sharply. He seemed about to speak, but thought better of it. A moment later Hors- ford, slipping a hand under one of his arms, asked, with pathetic eagernese: “You do belleve, Rennison, that wtill is possible that Channing’s mem- oranda concerning the secret of h discovery may be found in his room? “It is possible,” Rennison answered, Horsford pro- ‘And you understand the full sig- nificance of it all, do you not?’ Hors- ford went on. “If that secret has been taken from the room—if it has fallen into the hands of agents of Seafalcon—it means that his subma- rines, equipped with the apparatus described, will be able to sink our ves- sels and those of other nations with- out coming to the surface for pur- poses of observation—without even thrusting a peri®ope into view. That much, at least, 1s clear to me,” Rennison’ replied. ' “Belisve me, Mr. Horsford, 1 will do my best.” Turning abruptly from the assistant =mecretary, Rennison addressed the se- crot service man: “You will come with me, Towndrow?' he asked. The secret service man, hesitating, glanced at Merschon. “Certainly—if vou wish it,” Town- drow said. ut you realize, of se, that T have been assigned to the Haynerville end of this affair. “It i because I thoroughly appre- ciate the importance of what has oc- curred at Haynerville that I am ask- ing you to accompany me. Unless I am greatly mistaken, incidents that occurred at Haynerville may have an important bearing on the death of Channing here—if, indeed, we find that Channing'y death was not due to | natural causes.” ‘My_only reason for hesitation is that Capt. Merschon is momentarily expecting an important communica- tion from Haynerville in reply to cer- tain inquiries which 1 requested him to make,” Towndrow explained. “Can you give me an hour?” Ren- mison queried “Ill be In my office until I hear from you again, Towndro Mer- echon said. “All_right, then, captain.” Town- @row muttered, nodding at Rennison. “How soon can we 'get in touch Wwith Coughlin?’ Rennison asked. “At once. Anticipating that you svould want to see him as soon as Possible. I told him to be in the lobby of the Wevmouthshire at five forty- five. Doubtless he already is there.” Walking briskly, Rennison and Towndrow left the big buflding to- gother. Though the hotsl was only & ehort walk distant, they entered a taxicab. Until now neither had ad- dreesed the other after leaving Hors- ford's office. When they were seated in the vehicle Rennison spoke. “Towndrow,” he asked, “what was 3t you had in your mind when a few minutes ago you remarked that when I get an offender with the goods *what follows is done in the Rennison way—not mine'?” Towndrow, flushing, chewed the end gf his clgar meditatively.” He aid not nswer. “‘Out with it, old_man,” mennison ersisted, kindly. “For a long while have been well awaro that there has been something between us—that you have had some reason for dlalik- ing me. What is it?" “I should not have spoken as I did, raptain,” Towndrow replied. “The fact is, however, there is a difference in our methads. Mine savor rather ore of the police, I.suppo: Pollc: cases, strictly speaking, never hav been quite in your line—un! some diplomatic official. foreign agent or officar of the Army or Navy was in- volved: Perhaps that is the reason we have different views—different methods.’ “Well?** Rennison queried, as his eompanion paused. “Well, most secret service cases, fike those of the police, reach the courts. If the prisoner gets a jail sentence, he has time to think thing: over for a few months—or years. H has a chance to reform. But in some of these cases of yours—well, cap- tain, it seems to me that some of those poor devils you caught with the oods g0t to their Maker too soon. at's During the remainder of the short pide neither of the occupants of the taxicab addressed the other. Both were moody when they alighted in gront of the Weymouthshire. Near the hotel desk they found Coughlin—tall, lean, square-shoul- dere with bronzed features and dron-gray hair. His alert, black eyes were expressive of impatience. As he marked the approach of Rennison and Towndrow, however, his face cleared a little and he advanced briskly to neet them. “Coroner Discum and Dr. Albertson mre here,”” Coughlin explained. “They I told them you wanted them to wait.” Rennison nodded approvingly. “No one other than yourself has been in the room since you first left 1t?” Towndrow asked. “No. It is locked and has been care- ful.lx guarded. Shall we go right up? Rennison and Towndrow nodded as- sent. Coughlin beckoned to two men Who were seated on one of the sofas in the lobby. They were Coroner Discum and Dr. Albertson, his physi- clan. Both were known to Rennison and Towndrow. They shook hands perfunctorily and then ascended in an elevator to the fourth floor. On a chair near the door of room 415 sat & “plain-clothes” policeman. Another stood near a window at the end of the hall. Coughlin drew a key from one of his pockets, opened the door, and the five men filed in. CHAPTER V. Sealed Lips. After following his four companions into the room, Coughlin closed and locked the door. All removed their hats and looked around them. The first object that held their gaze was the figure of a man lying on the floor—a man still youthful, a little | below medium height and of frail physique. The hair was brown and somewhat long. The thin, pallid, up- turned face was clean-shaven. The body was attired in a neatly fitting suit of blue serge, a pink silk shirt, white collar, black tie, pink socks and low tan shoes “He looks more like a dry goods clerk or summer boarder than a naval man,” Coughlin muttered. Rennison glanced sharply at Town- drow, who had not told him how much the looal detective knew concerning Channing’s visit to Washington.” “He was not a naval man,” Town- drow answered, shortly. “Well, Coughlin, how far have you got?” Rennison inquired, abruptly. “Not very far, captain,” replled the detective. "It doesn't look much like murder to me. It's a cinch, though, somebody left here in the devil of a hurry. The lock was turned before the door was closed by some one who made off with the key. The gaze of Rennison now was resting on a flat straw hat which lay on the floor between the bri bed and a window. “That's his hat, I suppose,” he said. “How did it get there?” “It's just where I found it, captain, when I first came into the room.” Rennison strode toward it picked it up, turned down the inner band, and with the point of his knife Joosened and drew open the silk lin- ;ing_inside the top. “H & neat-looking fellow—so neat, indeed, that one scarcely would suspect him of having the habit of tossing his hat to the floor,” Rennison muttered. “He might have had it on his head when he fell and it might have rolled over there,” Coughlin suggested. “8o it might,” Rennison aseented. Towndrow, who had been gazing at the body, glanced sharply toward th captain, in whose tone thers wa: something that impressed him as significant. Rennison replaced the hat on the floor, on the spot and in the position it had been when he first observed it. His manner indicated that in it he had found nothing that held his interest. The Secret Service man looked curiously at the hat. then slowly shifted his gaze across the floor until it came again to tho body at his feet. He glanced again at the hat. then at Rennison. “If the man fell here. it 1s unlikel. that the hat, falling from his he; would have rolled to that side of t bed, of eourse,” Towndraw said. “Tt is not improbable, however, that he was_standing near the window when he first was striok: and that he ered to where he fell.” “You are quite right, Towndro Rennison answered with a nod. “Well, gentlemen, if there is no ob- jection. we will proceed to an ex- amination of the body,” said the cor- oner. “Have you any suggestion to make before we begin?" “None—except that each article of clothing might be handed to us for examination as it {8 removed,” Rennl- son replied. Coroner Discum, nodding, turned to his colleague. “Well, Dr. Albertson, let us get to work,” he sald. Addressing Rennison, he went on: “You will understand, gentlemen, that this preliminary ex amination is made here at the request of Detective Coughlin, who has ex- plained that it Is in accordance with urgent police requirements. I should prefer to conduct the autopsy in the morning. If, however, you think it desirable that it be performed to- night—" “I would suggest that it be per- formed tonight,”” replied Rennison. “It will be done, then, as soon as we get the body to the morgue.” In reply to a question, Coughlin explained to Rennison that all papers he had examined had been returned by him to the pockets in which they were found, and that he had but- toned the vest in the manner in which it had been when he first saw it—the top button being in the second but- tonhole. As each garment was taken from the body by the physician, who was aided by Coughlin, it was passed to Rennison. The papers taken from the pockets were few. There were six letters. One was from Horsford, directing its reciplent to visit Wash- ington. One was from an intimate friend, and four others were commu- nications from manufacturing firms which, apparently, had been fllling certain orders placed with them by Channing. In a black pocketbook was found half a sheet of notepaper containing & list of business firms, whose names appeared on two of the letters. Also in the pocketbook were $250 in bills, visiting cards bearing the dead man’ name, some receipts for money paid, four blank checks on a New York bank and some memoranda which ap- peared to have no connection with she visit to Washington. The gold watch and fob chain were in place, as was also & handsome silver cigar- ette case. Other articles, such as a fountain pen, bunch of keys, a sllver penknife and a pair of folding scis- sors, were inconsequential. Of all the articles found, that which appeared to interest Rennison most was & pocketbook of soft red Turkish leather. This had the appearance of newnees, and was found in one of the inside gock s of the coat. It was empty, t, while the nether garments were being removed from the body, Rennison took the pocketbook to a window. There, after carefully in- specting it, he raised it to his nostrils. Inside the pocketbook were three panels and a panel-like flap. The side panels were of green pressed morooco, stamped with four thin gilt parallel lines along the edges. Be- hind the el on the right was a =n'l'z:g°p::kot‘.h'%: thah}eft plne: e middle panel 'h'. of Cfilllllnld. ;’h fl -+ the same sise as the midd) el, over which it lay when it was closed. ‘When the flap was thrust back it re- vedled a large pocket behind the pan- els, extending the full width of the pocketbook. This pocket, as well as the pockets of the panels, was lined with green watered silk. “Towndrow, bring me that vest, will you?' Rennison asked. The BSecret Service man quickly picked up the vest from the back of a chalr and took it to where Renni- son was standing. The Army officer took it and glanced at the inside lin- ing. He saw it contained two pock- ets. Bach of these pockets he raised to his nose. As he laid the pocket- book on the sill of the window Town. drow picked it up and looked at it uriously. ~ : s THE EVENING STAR, WASHINGTON, D.
