'Y * OVERHEATING EVIL | SHOWN BY REPORT _ Experts of New York Ventila- * tion Commission Discuss - Best Way to Air Rooms. Flow to assure for schoolrooms and other public mecting places an ade- quate circulation of fresh, pure air at the right mperature and also the concurrent removal of the impure air from such rooms is explained in the forthcoming report of the New York state commission on ventilation, hased on a long and exhaustive series of practical experiments over a period of several years. The full report of this commission is about to be pub- shefl. The standing and _chap- cter of the X investigators n- an reading of _their They are: Dr. C. E. A. Kim- ball, ventilating enginee Prof. Winslow tells how these in- vestigations ha’ furnished the clear- est evidence that the effects of bad ventilation the main to be traced to overheating, excess of hu- midity and lack of air movement. It appears further that the Iundame_n- {al problems of ventilation are phys- ical, mot chemical, and cutaneous rather than respiratory. That is, they doal with the physical effect of the fir upon the outer skin of the body rather than in its effect upon the organs of breathing. , Danger in Overheating. svidence of a striking lhas been obtained by the commission <howing the extent of the damage fue to comparatively slight degrees of overheating. They have shown fhat a temperature only a little over &8 degrees “produces demonstrable erangements in the circulatory sys- tem of the body, that it militates to a ‘marked degree against efficiency and that it contributes in substantial measure’ to_increased susceptipility tory infection.” ‘°v§°§"5’2"‘m5| tests it was found that the bodily work performed by men rooms a 5 degrees was 15 per ‘nt less than in the same rooms at a temperaturs of 63 degrees. At $6 degrees the work dropped to T2 per cent of that done at 68 degrees. The practical he commission in regard to actual oolroom ventilation are of even ater popular interest and value. Tt was found that it is rarely pos sible to properly ventilate the ordi nary schoolrooni by the use of win. dows alone. But Prof. Winslow says that this conclusion has no bearing upon the problem of the open-alr rooms in which it is desired to main- tain a_temperature of 60 degrees or character | & tests conducted by |3 JOHN D. He is of the opinion that open- window rooms have pre their value, in combination with proper othing. feeding and rest, for the * subnormal child, and he urges that such a room “should be included in the plans for every school bullding* | Window Plan Best. i Two methods of schoolroom ven- ! tilation are compared. One is the system of fan ventilation and fresh r supply through pipes. The other the modified window ventilation ethod, in which the fresh air passes through open windows over slanting window boards and through heating radiators, with a gravity exhaust pipe at the top of the room. It is found that the fan system gives a greater amount of air change and lower carbon dloxide content, as compared_with the modified window em. But invariably the fan-ven- ated room has to be kept at slight- higher temperature than the modi- d window plan necessitated. The conclusion reached is that a lower temperature with less air movement is distinctly more comfortable to the average occupant than a higher tem- perature with more vigorous currents ; of alr.
