BY STUART P. WEST. | Special Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, December 22.—Today’ | stock market bore out the best tradl- itions of Christmas eve with an ad- vance which, although by no means general, was very lively in the shares selected for lcadership. | For the most part the day was made |up of a series of special upward move- jments for special Teasons. But un- ! deriying the general market was the same feeling of confidence which has {becn constantly in evidence since the start of the month. | There has been =2l along a con- | siderable body of Wall strest opinion that has been out of sympathy with the rise, has looked upon it as merely a temporary recovery lkely to be fol- lowed by “another “downward turn | milar to that of November. Traders | who have held this view have been contesting the advance, and what evi- dently happened today was that some of the more stubhorn of the short sellers finally decided to run. Stocks Advance Easily. Short covering, however, was only an inefgent contributing to the sharp up- bidding of the speculative leaders. The main _explanation for the market's | strength was simply that real holders of stocks were not anxious to sell, and that consequently operations for the | rise wcre encountering no serlous re- sistance. There was little to be sald, that has not already been said. con- cerning the individual moves. Tobaceo | stocks were showing a Letter lyprecln-i { tion of the fact that this has been a very properous vear and that during the last few months especially the earnings ! of these companies have been nnukmgg all records. In connection with the up- turn in the equipment shares the talk of extra dividends persisted. . Motor shares were bought again becauso the seaeon iz approaching when new business comes in rapidly. The steels.' coppers and rails were not as prominent as other mroups, but they were for the most part fairly strong. Burns Brothers Active. i Various details remain to be com- pleted” before the recapitulization plan of the Burns Brothers Company is ready to be acted upon. This has been tho rcason for the two adjust- ments of tne committe which has the plan in charge. The next meeting is scheduled for Tuesday. There has been considerable odd- lot investment buying golug on in Burns Brothers A. the orders com- ing from people who are attracted by the relatively high yvield, by the prospect of still larger returns when tha new capital project goes through and by the wide margin of safety back of the present dividenas. The strength today fn the nubl!c’ jutility shares was general, cvidently anticipating. the favorable results for 1922 which these companfes will show. North American common istock was bought’ largely in expecta- jtion of an Increased dividend. The directors very likely will raise the rate from 10 to 12 per cent on the common stock of $30 par value at their next meeting. Earnings on the common will exceed $i1 a share after | all charges and depreciation. Tnited States Steel Rumors. i Now that the stories of an extra dividend on United States Steel com- mon have been spiked by an officlal | denial. another rumor has cropped out || regarding possible developments, This | 118 that the Steel Corporation is likely jto retire its bonds through the use jof Its United States bonds now held jin the Treasury. The position of the i company is said to be much like that the Tezas Company confronted when it emploved $23.000,000 in cash in the |callln: in of all bonds. This also is said to be a plain case of non-taxable utilization of surplus If United States Steel should desire to do it. Predictions that German note circu- lation would reach the trillion mark by the first of the year are going to be more than realized. With another jump of 124,000.000.000 during the week ending December 15, the total of Reichshank notes outstanding was raised to 970,000,000.000 marks. This means that the' paper currency has more than doubfed within the last six weeks. The surprising part about this Ger- man financlal situation is that the mark should be selling actually {higher than it was when the out- standing paper notes were less than half their present volune. Cotton at Higher Level, Cotton got well up to its high of the iseason directly as a result of favor- able advices from the goods trade. {The vita] thing in_ the cotton situa- {tion continues to be that the fears ientertained four months ago of the| jrise in the raw staple checking the | idemand for finished products. are seen | {to Lave been unwarranted. On the jcontrary the manufacturers of cotton | goods are experiencing difficulties in | {keeping pace with their orders. | The last hour or so on the stock ex- change was given up to the customary i Christmas festivities to such an ex- tent as to greatly curtail the volume of business. At the same time there was more or less scattered realizing, {which had its effect upon prices. But the greater part of the early gains | were maintained. = TREABURY CERTIFICATES. NEW YORK, December 22.—As far as trading on the exchange was con- cerned, it was a very dull day in the bond market. The Christmas spirit which prevailed in stocks was lacking in bonds. ¥ There were some very heavy deal- ings in railroad bonds over the coun- ter, a large block being offered for the account of financial institutions. The bonds offered were all high- srade underlying securities, sale of which, in any large quantities, is not usual at this time of year. Traders were confident of a better market after the first of the year? Among the features in the general list were Mexican Petroleum 8s, which made a new high. The influence here, doubtless, was the conversion Dprivi- lege. At any time prior to May 1, 1931, bonds ‘are convertible into Pan-Ameri- can Petroleum “B" stock at $100 per share.. The stock sold around 87 to- day. There was renewed activity in Brierhill Stecl 5%s, with further ad- vance in price’ The St. Paul bonds did_better for the most part. The weakest was the 4s of 1925, which wiil be the St. Paul's first large maturity. The convertible 4%s sold higher. The New Haven 63 continued their decline, today’s price being the Jowest for some time. The loss was largely made up by a rally later. Erie convertible 4s, serles D, and Erie prior llen 4s both gained ground. Baltimore and Ohio 55 sold slightly higher. In general, there was an inciinution to ‘avor securities of rozds which have uettled with the shop strikers. Other Insues Irregular. The high-grade issues moved irre ularl®. Atchison General 4s were low- Atlantic Coast Line 45 and Great Northern 4%s gained. Lake Shore ssues, both the 4s of 1928 and the 5 of 1931, moved up. The only fea- ture among forelgn bonds was the strength in Netherlands 6s, and the rise in Mexican 5s. Price chunges in government issues werc very small, but the tendency was upward, - A good deal of interest was shown In reports of new financing by Armour & Company. The amount involved was stated at $100,080,00, partly for pur- chase of Morris & Company and part 1y for refunding. It is expected thal the ten-year 7 per cent motes and the 6 per cent debentures will be retired and new securities issued at a lower rate.
