CONFIRMS BUTLER TOSIPREE BENEH' | Senate, 61 to 8, Votes Fa- vorably on Nomination of Associate Justice. KU KLUX KLAN OPPOSES | Organization Said to Object on Grounds That Nominee Is a Catholic. ‘The nomination of Plerce Butler, St. Paul attorney, to be an associate jus- tice of the United States Supreme Court was confirmed late yesterday by the Senate. The vote was 61 to 8. It was reported that letters oppos- ing the confirmation of Mr. Butler, cmanating from the Ku Kiux Kian, | had been received by a number of the senators ycsterday, and several ©f them admitted receiving letters. The main reason for the oppasition of the klan, it was sald, to the con- firmation of Mr. Butler was that he is a Catholic. Some of the friends of Mr. Butler explained the vote of sev- cral senators from the south In oppo- they are smooth and delight- ful as a caress! Avignone Freres Caramels are sans dire inimitable. Bon Bons and Chocolates in half-pound to five-pound gift boxes. THE _EVENING STAR, WASHINGTON, D. C, Pennsylvania Avenue A Personal Matter— Here’s an opportunity for the men to “give” themselves something— one of these exceptionally good Overcoats — either the Double-breasted Great Coat or the Single-breasted Box Coat. Both produced in Double-faced Cloths, Herringbones, Shetlands, Tweeds, etc.—with the fancy or two-toned backs—and the light Grays and Tans especially. Marked at a price through a woolen cir- cumstance—otherwise they’d be well-nigh double. FRIDAY, DECEMBER 22, 1922.
