BY GEORGE T. HUGHES. Special Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, December 1.—Bond today. Inquiry was better than in weeks and quotations responded with sharp advances. day following a holiday. Pennsylvania general 4%s jumped a point and a quarter, a remarkable advance for a bond of that grade. Atchison general 48 sold up to o9%. Burlington 5s were active at par. Great Northern 78 touched 110. San Antonio and Arkansas Pass 4s, a bond which depends for its strength on the guaranteo of the Southern Pacific, went up nearly a point. _Northern Pacific prior lien 4s, prac- tically a first mortgage on the sys- tem, was another high-grade bond in demand. The same was true of North- ern Pacific 6s. Colorado and Southern 41s, one of the best of the second- grade bonds, sold up a point. All Iswuen Included. Speculative bonds shared the im- provement shown by high-grade is- sues. St. Paul issues were all higher. Erle issues were stronger. Baltimore and Ohio 4s, one of the best of that road’s bonds, gained % of a point, and Baltimore and Ohlo 5s, a junior issue, vanced a little less. The Seaboard ues all did better. Trading was very active at an advance of over 2 points. Libertys Make Advanmces. Trading in libertys was compara- tively quiet, but quotations for all issues showed substantial advances. About the only exception to the pre- vailing strength was the case of the Chicago Rallway bs. The explanation here was that a large block had been overhanging the market and was being slowly absorbed. COPPER MERGER RUMOR AROUSES WALL STREET Anaconda-Chile Report Neither Af- firmed Nor Denied by Officials. By the Associated Press. YORK. December 1.—A per- sistent report that the Anaconda Cop- per Manufacturing Company {8 nego- tiating to acquire the Guggenheim stock in the Chile Copper Compan; which cropped up recently, was revived today in Wall Street, but officials of the Ana- conda refused either to confirm or deny it. The report today was that the deal was almost completed except for ar- rangements of detalls of payment in cash and In a new serles of convertible bonds junior to Anaconda series A 6s and series B 7s. The price sald to have been arrived at was slightly un- der $25 a share. The amount of Chile stock sald to be involved in the transaction was 2,200,- 000 shares. The Chile mines are re- ported to be producing 14,000,000 pounds a year at a cost of slightly over 6 cents a pound, with interest on the companies' bonds amounting to about 2 cents a pound. —_— PIERCE OIL DIRECTORS PUT UNDER RESTRAINT Order Setting Aside Election of Board Also Suspended for Twenty Days. By the Associated Press. RICHMOND, Va., December 1.—An order restraining the board of direc- tors of the Pierce Oil Corporation from other than routine acts was is- sued by Judge William A. Moncure, in chancery court here today. at the re- quest of the preferred stockholders. Judge Moncure also suspended twenty days his final order setting aside the ‘election of the board on October 2 last, and ordering the elec- tion of a new board. This action was requested by counsel for the common stockholders, in order to allow them time to prepare an appeal to the state supreme court. —_— MORE THANKSGIVING JOY. Four Big Corporations Act Upon Dividends. Special Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, December 1.-—-Stock- holders in four big corporations had further cause for Thanksgiving to- day. Prairie Pipe Line and Prairie Oil and Gas each purpose to declare 200 per cent stock dividends. Dec- laration of a 200 per cent stock divi dend has been authorized by Wiscas 73 { sette Mills Company stockholders and Standard Oll of Kentucky has de- clared the regular quarterly dividend of §1.25, an extra one of $5, and will decide December 21 whether to issue a 66 2-3 per cent stock dividend. Earn- ing gains over 1921 have been reduced heavily and the outlook for last-quarter dividend action in some cases is corre- spondingly less favorable. Returns will exceed those of 1921, however.
