Threat of Con- tinuous Session Fails to Shake Grip of Foes. Republican threats to force a con- tinuous session of the Senate, carry- ing through last night and today, in order to break the democratic fili- buster against the Dyer anti-lynching bill, falled to materialize. The Senate adjourned last evening at 6 o'clock until noon tomorrow. The democrats apparently were still in control of the situation, operating under the rulea of the Senate. In, the five-hour session yesterday nothing was accomplished, not even the approval of the journal of Tues- day's session. When adjournment was taken, Senator Pat Harrison of Missisaippi still had on his desk & number of amendments to offer to the journal. When the session opens to- morrow there will be still another day’'s journal of proceedings to be approved. There appears to be no hope whatever that the republicans will_be able to get the Dyer anti- lynching bill before the Senate for consideration before the speolal,se: sion ends, and the regular sion begins at noon Monday. Even should the republicans force a continuous session, running through tomorrow, tomorrow night and Saturday, it would, under the practices of the Senate, close by midnight Saturda for the Senate never sits on Sunday, except for the purpose of pronounc- ing eulogies of dead senators. Plan Action in New Session. When the new session opens an- other attempt may be made to get the Dyer bill up. But if the democra persist in their filibuster, as they | sist they will do, there appears littie chance for action. It is not belleved that the republicans will throw up ]| the shipping bill, the farm credits bill and the annual appropriation bills to | engage In a protracted contest with { the filibusters. . More debate marked yesterday's session than the preceding day's, an the democrats were compelled to make only two motions to amend the journal in furthering thelr policy of jobstruction. One of these motions was to insert the chaplain’s prayer, omission of which, Senator Harrison said, might cause children 100 years ! hence “to hang their heads in shame at their greal-greal-grea'.-xrand- fathers in the Senate.” The other motion, which was still pending when Ithe Senate adjourned, would have {designated in the journal the time I\vhen the President pro tempore Tues- | day gave up the chair and Vice Presi- { dent Coolidge, absent during the early part of the session in attendance at the cabinet meeting, assumed it—an iamendment which Senator Harrison isaid “certainly should be made for the sake of accuracy.” Debate Centered om BflL The debate late in the day gradual- 1y became centered upon the Dyer bill | with Senators New, republican, Indi- iana, and Willis, arguing for its pas- isage. Later the discussion turned to its origin with Senator Caraway, dem- i ocrat, Arkansas, declaring he was of !the opinion it was formulated “by n association having white officers but ving to do with negroes and { with offices in New York." Senator Cummins, republican, Towa, ratic filibuster was “a proper re- * to the republicans for having ailed to amend the Senate's “anti- uated and unjust rules” The demo- crats, he asserted, were not gulilty of any moral crime in using the rules as they stood because, he added, they belonged to another civilization. Two other statements stood out in Ithe several hours of discussion, much iof which during the latter part of the {day involved the constitutionality of the bill. Senator Underwood, in re- {sponse to an inquiry, announced he personally would mnot filibuster against the shipping bill when it reached the Senate. Senator Short- ridge of California, in charge of the bill, informed the Senate he under- stood that mot all of the democrats were opposed to the measure and that at least one, Senator Ashurst of Ari- zona, would vote for it. )SELF-DETERMINATION . i IN LIQUOR FIGHT URGED Buenos Aires Woman’s Protest Against U. Enthusiasm was worked to a high ipitch as speakers representing many } countries urged that the whole world be made dry, and, as a dramatic cli- !max at adjournment, all pledged i themselves to an unremitting fight for prohibition. One resolution passed read “This convention reaffirms the right of every country to suppress alcohol- ism within its borders; indignantly protests against pressure by any country upon any other to break down jsuch self-determination, and urges that insistence upon this fundamental principle should be the official busi- ness of every free government.” Miss Hardynia K.
