Lincoln 7700 YOUR \ TROUBLE _ \_ ZONE AN ~ the nose and throat s;x I:fanclles The President Players opened their second week of “Smilin’ Through” at the President Thedter last night be- fore a large audience, whose marked enthusiasm seemed auspiclous for the repetition of last week’s success. Miss Eileen Wilson gave a delightful in- terpretation of Jane Cowl's famous dual role. Her Moonyeen is ador- ably reminiscent of the belle of“the days when hoop skirts and heliotrope were fashionable, and she makes a picture in the bridal dress of fifty years ago that is most pledsant to re- member. As Kathleen, the self- confident little Irish “heroine of the present-day episodes of the play, Miss Wilson won sympathy and interest. Her witty lines were put over in her own original method. Henry Duffy, both as a foiled villain and an upright, modern young ' lover, shared Miss Wilson's popularity with the audience, and Guy D’'Ennery as the ardent young lover of half a i century ago gave an admirable inter- pretation to his role. His cantanker- i ous, embittered old man role also was artistically played, and Robert Loew, as Dr. Owen Harding, made an ex- Icellent foil to D'Ennery’s John Car- teret of the present day. Helen Blair does her most individual work as Ellen in this play, and shows much talent in this character. Other mem- bers of the cast fill their roles most adequately. The scenery is unusually attractive for a stock company production. There will be no performance of “Smilin’ Through” tonight because of a ceremonial session of Almas Temple of the Mystic Shrine, but with this exception the play will be presented at night and matinees as usual. BELASCO—“Midnight Rounders.” “The Midnight Rounders,” a re- vue which opened for a week’s en- gagement at the Shubert-Belasco Theater yesterday, affords, for the most part, a continuous round of mer- riment and is well worth seeing. Hardly a better show has been pre- sented at this theater this season, and the audience showed its approval in an unmistakable way. The come- dians are good, the dancing is en- tertaining and the costumes and scenery are beautiful. Joe Smith and Charles Dale, the leading comedians are worth the price of admission. Most of their jokes are new and those that have been heard before are still en(erul‘rh ing. This pair appear first in “A children grew objection to ‘the at- tachmént came from the laird and his family, se study *volce,” with expenses paid by the laird. Unfortunately, she re- turned with a wee baby and no wed- ding ring. - ‘Then came Donald back from col- lege, but cutting ‘through the slimy colls of slander and ostracism with which the gossips of the town had surrounded Nan, he went straight to the object of 'his affection. How Donald was then sent to the woods to recover from his love, how he re- turned, raving with fever, to drop on the doorstep from which Nan had gone forth to New York; how Don- ald nearly died, but was brought back’ when Nan returned to save him; how they overcame the great odds and found happiness is an interest- ing story. Miriam Cooper,, Ralph Graves, Lionel Belmore, W. J. Ferguson and Eugenie Besserer lead a cast in which there is no weak spot. The Metro- politan program is embellished with a Mack Sennett comedy, the Metro- politan World Survey, “Fun From the Press” and a delightful orches- tral overture from “Blossom Time.” PALACE—“Youth to Youth.” Billie Dove was pictured at the Pal- ace last night in “Youth to Youth,” a Metro production, and proved conclu- sively to .a capacity audience that there is a speedy answer when young: blood calls for a helpmate. The part was particularly appro- priate for Miss Dove. She is a recent acquisition to the screen fronf the footlight sector and the part she plays is that of a Broadway star at the out- set of the picture. She overhears un- savory rumors concerning her at- tachment to a “higher-up” in the the- atrical world. She divorces Broadway and becomes a member of a barn- storming troupe. Under an assumed name she wends her way through ru- ral hamlets and unexpectedly meets-a young farmer. The result Iz obvious A paradox exists, however, when the husbandman husband attempts to force his bride up the ladder of fame in the theatrical line, and she puts her foot down on it. There's a happy end- ing, in which the girl who fled from scandal s esconsed in a snug little farmhouse, the antithesis of her for- mer surroundings. Cullen Landis as the young farmer; Zasu Pitts, Edythe Chapman, Sylva Ashton and others lend first-class sup- port to the principals in the cast. Nan was sent away to| 1ing for_temporary. employment.
