'SALADA" TE.A Not every woman can content her- seif with a few simple frocks for summer evenings. She may hug to her heart the fact that high gowns, without sleeves, have served for ceremonial - occasions through two winters .of gayety. She realizes that the deeply decollete gown has not been worn to any extent since Amer- ica went to war. France and England discarded it the day they went into battle. The average ‘woman did not grasp fho fact at first that a gown cut no low- er than the collarbone could be con- sidered sufficiently formal to serve at a ball or night at the opera. But it was. The world considers it proper today, even in peace. There is no dimunition of its pres- tige, but, and this is a very big “but,” the material must be sumpt- uous if one is to wear this kind of gown to evening parties, Which brings us to the original statement that all women cannot be content al- ways with a few simple frocks to wear after the lights are lit. If they g0 to pleasure places, the exigencles of soclal life call for an ornate frock. It is sleeveless, even if it is 70t low in the neck. Gold lace fills this need. It comes in a mesh which is most supple and cobweb-like, and is draped over a thin slip of cloth of gold. The sketch shows such a gown. It is embroi- dered in coral and carries a girdle of coral beads. The cape that is used at the back of this frock is a feature of evening apparel that most women like. It redeems the simplicity of the one- piece frock. It acts as a background. .5 The unevenness of the hem of the skirt is accentuated this summer, for it is an aggressive way to persuade women to accept long skirts. There is no longer any argument about the length of the skirt. It is definitely long. Late spring clothes proved that. The fashionable skirt may not quite touch the ankles, but it touches the instep. Fullness at the waist or hips is also_accepted, and it is ered in the Victorian manner. (Copyright, 1922.) Curried Potatoes. Then add about three-fourths of a cup of white stock, one-half a table- spoon each of curry powder and lemon juice and salt and pepper to taste. ‘Cook untll the potatoes have absorbed the stock. Grape Juice Punch. To make grape juice punch, take one-fourth of a cupful of grape juice, one teaspoonful of lemon juice, three- fourths of a cupful of cold water and sugar to taste. Richmond, Va. some of the stout stouts, I published here some time ago a table showing a reasonable, healthful and good look- ing excess over the “average” weights for women of various ages and heights, and announced that I did not propose to help any woman reduce unless her weight was clearly above the limit. The framework of the body may be of the socky or thickest (ugly word, I knew) type, with musculature in keeping, even though the bones are not thicker or heavier; the slender ones have narrow chests, long waists, often contracted pelves and narr hips; stout stouts have large ches short waists and fully developed hi This applies to men and The Big-Boned Stouts. I am compelled to confess that my conscience bothers me some about the cruel and seemingly harsh things I have said here to and of fat folks. As father used to say—and what he said hurt more than what he did— well, you know now what he'said. I meant no evil; I abused fat folks in- dividually and collectively for thelr own good. A good many victims of the now terribly unfashionable over- welight handicap plead In extenua- tion that they are “big boned.” How they arrive at this conclusion that their bones are thicker than ordinary human bones is a mystery to me, un- less they estimate on the basis of the thickness that comparatively acces- sible portion of the skeleton from the superciliary ridges up. 2 Charles K.
