NEW YORK, June 16.—Relatively firm Liverpool cables failed to inspire any buying of consequence in the cotton market at the opening today and first prices were 1 point lower to 1 higher. No change was reported with refer- ence to the tropical disturbance respon- sible for the posting of storm warn- ings on the lower Texas coast and weather prospects for that section were considered uncertain. Otherwise, the weather map was regarded as gener- ally favorable and prices eased off after the opening under scattering liquidation and a little southern selling. ~October sold down to 21.36, or about 15 points net lower. Futures opened steady, July. 21.66; October, 21.50; December, 21.32; Janu- ary, 21.17; March, 21.0 NEW ORLEANS, June 16.—Better ca- bles than due caused a rise of 4 to 9 points on the opening of the cotton market today, but continued hot and dry weather over the greater part of the belt soon resulted in selling, under ‘which prices fell to levels 13 to 21 points under the close of yesterlay. Warning by weather bureau caused new buying and at the end of the first hour of busi- ness prices were 10 to 15 points up from the lowest. July 1 rose to 21.72 and when the selling was heaviest fell July, 21.72 20.88; Jai pened steady. 21.15: December, Santa Fe freight loadings last week were 26,164 cars, against 28552 the previous week and 28,169 for cor- responding week last year. & 1 To Oil Cal 6s. 101 La (u Prod B, 106 10513 105 1 2 Vacoum Oil 7. 107 107 107 12 Western Electr! 108% 108% 108% 4 Winchester 715 100§ 100~ 100 FOREIGN BONDE. ! 10 Argentine 7s *23. 7% 9i% M7 2 Cits Gr Prague TG 1% 1% 40 Elberfelde 5 . LIQUDATION MORE INTHE MARKET Support Lacking as Losses Are Stretched an Addi- :tional Point or Two. BY STUART P. WEST. NEW YORK, June 15.—As had been fully explained at the close of busi- ness Thursday, the stock market to- day was subjected to a further test of its ability to withstand selling | pressure. I'rofessional syndicates, as is al- | ways the case after so sudden and violent a decline, were altogethe: {pessimistic and inclined to furthe: | ventures on the side of lower pric | It was a fact also that the ten da during which the market had be 1 ;| Boing down was not a long enough | space to allow a proper adjustment o! |2 spcculative position which hau {been steadily expanding for months. A large amount of the ¢ layed liquidation remained after the | first great break lust Mondas | was this secondary selling waie Which bore the market down o session today. Lowe a Point or More. The downward movement checked until the leaders of tl dustrial list were down another po {or two points all around and unti: |large part of the market was below Inm lowest of Mondasy it significant | Thursday ana lapped over into | was s illustrating that the trouble lay wnolly in « pre | vious over spcculation, but invest- ment sccuritics were not affected at all. On the contrary, the upward te dency continued,” especially in gov- ernment bonde, with the liberty first 4548 at a new high mem- bers of the United war loan g1oup well up 1o their L and with Lnited Kingdom bonds higher than they have scld in the last woek or | more. French bonds were not as senst- tive as they had been on other occa- sions 1o the weakness in KFieneh ex- change, which wap again very pro- {nounced. Rates got down again to then J 8t of just Tuesday, but {other exChanges. including lire and sterling, were only moderately af- fected 1t is now evident that the marke: for franc exchange is beginning i take more seriousiy the statements made bv (ietman financiers that the July installment of reparations i un- {certain and that the subsequent menthly quota is much more dublous still. Money 3 Per Cent. The money market felt the efect of the distribution of liberty bond in- terest and the supply of funds avail- able at 3 per cent on call loans was more abundant. In none of the mar- kets was there any reaction to Thurs day's droppin, off in the Englis bank rate. The possibility of this forcing the hand of the federal] re- serve authorities continued to be die- {cusscd. but the action of the latter s iof far less consequence than it was last winter and spring. The though' is that the general money market anticipated long ago in its prevailing level of quotation any reductions likely to occur in official rediscount rates. Durant Motor Co. Stockholders of the Durant Motor Company will meet June 27 to yote on an increase in capital to two 1 lion shares of no par value, common stock. The present authorized cap:- tal is one million shares, of which about seven hundred thousand are outstanding. The three hundred thou- sand shares of unissued stock is being held for conversion of stock of Du- rant Motors' subsidiaries into the shares of the parent company. Issue {of the new stock is being asked to provide means for possible future ex- pansion. Sharp Individual Declines. The market for many of the recent speciulty favorites proved extremely narrow when the selling movement struck it. Specialists in these stocks had very few standing orders on their i books, for pool support had. for the { moment, been withdrawn. the mana- gers of these speculative syndicates !figuring that the situation had to be cleaned up and that there was no use taking stocks off the hands of the pub- lic at any higher prices than was necessary. What happened was that selling orders put in for execution “at the market” along with stop orders. were bunched together and taken over at sharp concessions. Steel Stocks. At today’s low Midvale Steel was off nearly fifteen points from its high a_month ago, when Wall Street was 1 obsessed by tha merger cr was one of the few stocks of wh it could be said that it had lost near] three-quarters of the entire advanc {since last August People cl | Midvale affairs said when the s was_around 45 and the street {talking 6¢ that whatever tion it went into the shares would not be worth over 40. But below 31 {where they sold today, such overvalu ation as there had been was certain’s wiped out with a vengeance. In no other member of the steel group wis there anything like such a decline Sugar stocks went down with the rest of the market. but their declin: {could not be attributed to conditions in the sugar trade. Cuban-America Sugar_and Punta Allegre Sugar are regarded as peculiarly fortunate g0 far as their revenues from this year's crop are concerned. NEW ISSUE POPULAR.
