Officials of the police department are investigating an allegation that Detective Frank M. Alligood of the automoblle squad accepted $50 from Richard Gregory Allen, employed in the legal department of the Shipping Board., who later was arrested and charged with the theft of an auto- mobile belonging to Harvey R. Burk'l ette, an internal revenue bureau em- ploye, who resides at 1340 R street. Detective Alligood denies the state- ment of Allen. He also denies a fur- ther statement that while in Allen’s apartment at Wardman Park yester- day morning he took a drink of ver- mouth. “1 was offered a drink,” Alligood stated, “but refused it, being afraid I would be doped.” Lost Car Over Year Ago. Burkette’s car was taken, it was said, a little more than a year ago from in front of the Arlington build- ing and recovered by him two months later, when, it is stated, he found it in. Allen's possession. Meeting Allen on the street, Burk- ette boarded the car and demanded to know where he got the vehicle, claiming it belonged to him. The question of receipts for the car was discussed, and Burkette, fearing Allen would meet with an accldent, took charge of the wheel. When the car neared the eighth precinct police statlon, it is stated, Allen jumped from it and disap- peared.” Burketts repor the oc- currence -to the police and retained possession of his car. He was by no means satisfied with the recovery of the auto, however, it is stated, feeling that something more was needed to compensate him for its loss. Two day ago, it is claimed, he met Allen on New York 'avenue near 15th nd noticed that he had a new car of the make of the one he had owned. 3 Blows were passed after they met, and Allen, who ran from the scene, was taken to the first precinct station and questioned, but. was not held. Car Taken to Garage. Burkette, it developed, drove off in the car that Allen had in his posses. sion and placed it in a garage. Ye 3 ® terday morning Detective Alligood got into communication with Allen and went with him to his apartment in Wardman Park, it is stated, to obtain the name of a man said to be implicated in the automobile trans- action. Detective Jett, in the meanwhile, ‘had obtained information to the Whereabouts of the car that Burkette had impounded. The car was recov: ered and Burkette taken to head. quarters under arrest. He later was discharged. t was when Detective Jett placed King under arrest at the District building that the first intimation of the alleged money transaction was glven. Allen is said to have ma tender to Jett, telling him he already had given Alligood $50 for his inter- est in effecting a settlement of the affair. Why can't I fix it with you as I did with Alligood?” he is said to have asked Jett. The Jatter safa he knew nothing of eny “fixing” and informed Allen that he was under arrest. Allen Put Under Bond. Inspector Grant demanded that bond for Allen be fixed at §5,000 to insure his appearance in Police Court next week. Alligood told a Star reporter there is absolutely no truth in the statement regarding the money Allen declares he gave him, New York avenue, Thursday after- noon. Allen said he purchased the |the most complete and extensive sci- car for 500, but, the detectives flmflo (exv;demg‘ny stated. w: unable to W get under a produce & bill) Wy S xpedition i3 a_resumption of Capt.
