- RAILWAY COMMON - AGTIVE AND FIRW On today's session of the local stock exchange, Railway common took the leadership and advanced to 401 on liberal sales, dropping back to 40% again on the sale of & block of 100 shares. Other local shares were compara- tively slow. Capital Traction ;was strong at 987, the high point on this movement. Lanston again sold at 77. 1t is not to be expected that yes- terday's rush of bond buying will mark the extent of the reinvestment demand at this time, but that further activities may be expected as soon as the first of the month maney flurry is over. Clearingn. Yesterday's clearings for Washing- ton were $4,591,787.85 and today's about $4,500,000. They mark about the culmination of the tax-paying period. The American National Bank had dit balance at the clearing house yesterday of over $1,000,000, probably one of the largest, if not the largest, credits on record. The credit represented tax checks deposited by the collector of taxes. Oversubscribed. Secretary Mellon announces oversubscription to the receht offe ing of $200,000,000 3% per cept month _certificates. 2 The Secretary was very sure of his position when he turned down the large oversubscription to the May is- sue of 3is. And he is just as sure today, or will be if he turns down the excess subscriptions at this time. Personal Mention. Milton E. Ailes is agaln at his desk at the Riggs National Bank for the long pull until October 1, when West Virginia will know him again. Will Spald of W. B. Hibbs & Co. Tas gone to New York for a few days No danger but what he will be back for convention time. Convention Notes. Chairman Addison of the committee on hotels and transportation for the forthcoming _annual convention of the District Bankers' Association an- nounced today that reservations had been made for 175 bankers and others who will be in attendance on the convention. This means a total at- tendance of over two hundred, as many reservations will be made next week and even up to the day of de- parture. One week from today the special train will leave for Hot Springs, where the convention will be held, practically three business sessions from 9 until 1 o'clock in the aft- ernoon, save on Saturday morning, when the convention wiil assemble at 10 o'clock. % The program has been practically completed, although D. R. Crissinger, controller of the currency, has not given his final answer as to whether he will attend the gathering or not. All arrangements are complete for the feast of solid matter, soclal ac- tivities and sports for four full days and three nights. Disbursements on account of in- terest and dividends are not heavy with June, this being an off month, ‘but there were sufficient maturity pe- .riods to result in the distribution lo- cally of $614,110, the larger share of which was paid out by the Washing- ton Railway and.Electric Company $107,250 dividend on preferred stock, $232/560 on its 4 per cent bonds for the semi-annual period. It also pald $30.000 on the debenture 6s. The Capital Traction Company paid 212 per cent interest on its $5,800,000 5 per cent bonds. The payments were as follow: Government bonds.
