INDIANAPOLIS, June 1.—The worst |} casualties suffered by American sol- diers during the world war are just beginning to show themselves. By contrast troops wounded on the bat- tleflelds are lucky compared with the |} greatly increased casualties of today. according to C. H. Harris, an official of the American Leglon's national headquarters here, in charge of ex- soldier claims against the govern- ment. There is an average of two ex- soldier suicides a day, Mr. Harris d clares, following a study of reports. These men, Mr. Harris finds, almost {{ without exception were in the battle lines in France. These soldiers, the legion official contends, were dis- charged by Army doctors as normal. Since the war, however, these men, struggling for a living, have under- gone mental anguish that their war- racked nerves could not withstand. Two Ways of. Giving Ald. There are two wi ent thelr increase, Mr. Harris points out. The Langley bill, now law, provides $17,- 000,000 for the construction of new hospitals. The larger portion of this money is to be spent in creating facilities for treating psychiatrics—mental patients. The also_preparing to petition | 8! to_liberalize the present ||y Sweet bill. This bill now makes it}f impossible for an ex-soldier to ob- taln government treatment for war |j injuries which show up more than two years after discharge from ser- vice. The legion cof! that it might easily be five years after dis- charge before injurious physical and mental effects of his service would appear. r. Harris further charges that the United States Veterans’ Bureau, in charge of the treatment and rehabili- tation of the world war's disabled, is in error concerning the gravity of the neuro-psychiatric sufferers. A recent Veterans' Bureau report shows that the bureau's total capacity for tment of neuro-psychiatric cases 99 beds. \ Citation of Statisties. Mr. Harris says he has reports from legion liaison representatives in each of the bureau's fourteen regional df tricts to show that in four of the fourteen distric alone there are 24,506 mental cases on record. These four districts include West Virginia, District of Columbia, Virginia, Ten- nessee, North Carolina, South Caro- lina, Marylan: Florida, Georgia, Nebraska, “lowa, Kansas, Mlissouri, ‘Washington, Oregon and Idaho. Of the number, 2,119 are being treated vernment hospitals and 996 in 4,628 se United States undergoing treatmént for mental disorder in .government institutions. erly to protect post-bellum sheil- shock cases.
