The sole trouble along this line iseal- { lowing people to subrent, and as soon as the landlords ‘decide 'to stop this| practice there will be no further| trouble. It isn’t the landlords, in most cases, who charge the exorbi- tant rents, but the people who rent the apartments and then subrent them. Last Sunday there were 182 fur-| nish apartments advertised for rent.| If the landlords would take the| trouble to look into this they would | find that nine-tenths of these apart- | ments. or all of them. were renting | for just about three times as much as they are unfurnished. It is nothing short of an outrage t allow people to hold on to apart- menta when they themselves are not occupying them. If they are not! profiteering. why do they hold on to, them? I know of several women in| this city who have rented up vacant| apartments. furnished them with cheap furnishings and in turn sub-| irented them at fabulous prices. As! soon as the landords stop this the! problem awill be solved. Why should the renters of Washington hafe to! submit to such hold-ups i Why should a person be aliowed to| rent an apartment unless Uiy ex- | pect to occupy it, and especially person of means? And last, but mul least. why should a renter, ' i | i i n order ! to get an apartment at all, be forced to buy a lot of *“cheap junk” at prices beyond reason?
