March 4.—More hope- !ful financial, commercial and tndus- trial conditions, reported from vari- ous sections of the country, found ex- pression in the active deaiings on the stock exchange this week. Trading in stocks and bonds ex- \ceeded any like period thus far this year, and high records for the current movement were established by many issues. "Improvement was most sub- stantial in_ speculative shares, how- over. material gains being limited to {dunior rails and obseure speciaitics, The money market was a helpful factor, call ioans being made for the most part at 4ls per cent, purchases of thirty to ninety day bills, espe- cially commercial paper, some of which was purchased at a slight con- cession from the 43 per cent rate. Production in the steel and iron itrade was on an ascending scale, but ithe further readjustment of condi- | tions in that business was indicated {by the unexpected omission of the |dividend on Sloss-Sheflield Steel pre- ferred. Similar developments mili- tated against the strength of tobac- cos and related lgsues. WOOL'UNDERTONE STRONG Actual Trading at Boston Is Light. Buying Drags. On sma!l purchases ' Postum Cereal developed further strength and advanced over a point. Oils generally were quiet but steady with unimportant price changes. The Cities Service issues were quiet, but steady. Gilliland Oil was in fair de- mand 2nd moved up fractionally, in- ternational Petroleum and Mutual Oil were easier. There was a further good inquiry for Kirby Petroléum. On moderate buying Arkansas Natural Gas moved up fractionally. Standard 0il of Indiana was offered down 2 fraction, Bonds were comparatively quiet with interests centered in the n&w Republic of Argentine 7s. _——— COTTON MARKETS. NEW YORK, March 4—The cotton market was barely steady at theopen- ing today. with first prices 2 to 16 | points lower, under Wall street and wire house sélling. This was promot- ed by the smaller business reported in cotton goods Apd talk of an irregu- lar tone in the stock market, but trade interests were moderate buyers at the decline, and prices steadied up a few points on a New Orleans report that fertilizer sales up to February 28 showed a decrease of 16 per cent as compared with last year and 70 per cent as compared with two years ago. aay contracts sold off to 17.85 at the start, and later rallied to 17.92 on a comparatively small volume of busi- ness. Futures opened _barely steady 1 March, 18.15; May. 17.87; July, 17.18; jOctober, 16.52; December,.16.37. .NEW ORLEANS, March 4—Figures on fertilizers, showing exceedingly small sales in the belt, offset the ef- fect of more favorable weather con- ditions in the cotton market today. Priced lost 2 to 8 points in the first half hour of the session, May trading down to 16.70. Secretary Hester of the New Orleans Cotton Exchange is- sued a statement just before the opening placing the total sales of fertilizers in nine states of the cot- ton region at 552,336 tons during the seven months ended with February, against 658,728 during the same pe- riod last year and 1,858,777 two years jago. This was a decrease of 16 per Icent‘ compared with the sales of a ent, compared with two years ago. Futures opened steady. March, May, 16.77; July, 16.49; October, 15.86: December, 15.67. . MORE FEBRUARY FAILURES. NEW YORK, March 4.—Business fallures in_ February established a new high record for the, month in number. but the total of' liabilities was smaller than it was in February, 1921. As reported to Bradstreet's, the number was 22.7 per cent less than in January and the liabilities declined 40 per cent from the January total. 1 Compared ,’llh February, 1921, the number increased 45.6 per cent and liabilities declined 13.2 per cent.: The previous maximum of failures in_February was reached in 1915 and it was esceeded in February of this year by 12 per cent. The comparison with February, 1921, is made all the gharper this year by the fact that the second month of last year brought the smallest total for the period in twenty-eight years. —_— NEW YORK BANK STATEMENT. NEW YORK. March 4—The actual condition of the clearing house banks and trusi companies for the week shows a deficit of $12,054,030 below legal requirements. This is a decrease of $56,256,550. ear ago, and a decrease of 70 per: Tn{ment during today's short stock mar- | ket session, the reaction extending ito oils and equipments. Studebaker J1ost 2 points: Chandlex and Unitea jStates 'Rubber, 1 to 1%;: Mexican Petroleum, Pierce Oll, Pure Oil American Locomotive, Baldwin Loco- motive, Republic Iron, American Hide | and Leather preferred, American Sugar® International Paper and United Fruit also falling 1 to 134 points. Junior Rails, especially Missouri Pacific common and preferred and Kansas City southern, were depressed, but Ann Arbor common gafned 3 points. Several of the local utilities, as well as Laclede Gas and Jewel Tea preferred were strong. The closing was heavy. proximated 400,000 shares. Much Uncertainty. Price movements reflected much un- certainty in the mind of the financial community as to the immediate posi- tion resuiting from the week’s specu- lation. The only weakness, however, occurred in the wheat market, which was still under the influence of the im- proved weather conditions in the south- Western states. For the moment the fear that damage to the winter wheat crop has been exaggerated is of more ‘ucnunt than the active export demand. Foreizn exchange had a further period of unsettlement at the start of the day, but rallied generally before | the close. The one exception was the German mark. and the reason for its decline below the .40 level was readily apparent in the weekly statement of the German refchsbank. German Finances. More striking than at any time so far was the desperate condition forced upon German finances which the succession of ten-day reparation pay- ments brought forth. Note circulation which for nearly a month had remained stationary, giving some hope that in- flation had been checked, suddenly jumped another 4,300,000 marks to the huge total of 120,026,000,000 marks. In view of this the advocation will certainly increase to have Germany balance her budget, even if to do so involves .additional taxes and enor- mous forced loans. ; —_— TOBACCO COMPANY PROSPERS. NEW _YORK, March 4.—Liggett & Myers Tobacco had its record year in 11921, its annual statement showing net profits of $12,650,739, in contrast to $10.552,966 in 1920 and $8,917, 232 in 1919, Its balance of $9,854,157, after paying interest, was $2,256,000 larger than in 1920 and equal to $25.23 on its common and class B com- mon stocks. The surplus of $4,383,- 868, after dividends, brought its total surplus up to $27,074,203. The com- pany, is reported as having ended the |year'in a strong position. NEW YORK, March 4.—The moder- ate weather recently created a quicken- 1 demand from retailers to fill in Int stocks of light-weight underwear for 1 H summer. Goods are reported as mov- ing with @& fair degree of rapidity and the feeling that within *another month the demand will bid fair to out- strip the supply prevails among sellers. Operators are saild to be increasing production of light-weight goods, while considerable less attention is being given to heavy-weight merchandise. That change in the buyers’ attitude has been reflected in price changes. Quotations for fall merchandise are weakening, while spring and summer underwear holds firm. i L0ST BAR PIN, diamond set Phone Mondsy.” Main’ 41357 gres, Rews Miss Gardls room_G4, *nhlnl s _bldg.
