C, SATURDAY, MARCH 4, 1922. - atest Announcements of‘° Church News, Activities and Services METHODISTS PURCHASE HOME FOR BISHOP RESIDING HERE Residence on Wyoming Avenue to Be Occupied by Head of All Churches in This Area. The Methodist Episcopal Church has acquired a residence here to be known as the Methodist Episcopal residence and will be the permanent home of the resident bishop of the Washing- ton area of the church. It is located t 2107 Wyoming avenue, and will be wccupied by Bishop and Mrs. William F. McDowell about May Washington is the headquarters of the Washington area. which com- prises four church conferences Balti- more, central Pennsylvania, Wash- ington and Wilmington, covering a territory embracig the District of Columbia, Maryland, a _considerable portion of Virginia, a large section of the central part of Pennsyvlvania and the state of Delaware as well as a part of West Virginia bordering on the state of Maryland. The active membership of the Washington area is 243,718, The Methodist Episcopal Chureh in the United States is di- vided into twenty-one areas, and the Washington area is regarded as one of the most important. During the year 1921 this area increased its mem- hership in greater proportion than any of the other twenty Plans for Purchase. Plans for the purchase of this cpiscopal residence were formulated several years ago, and a great num- ber of properties’ were inspected by the bishop and other members of the committec, which was composed of . nineteen district superintendents, an equal number of ministers, and the same number of laymen, together with editors and presidents of col- Jeges within the territory of the area. Plans were also discussed leading to the purchase of a suitable lot on hich could be erected a building suited to the needs of a bishop, and which at the same time would be in Xeeping with the high dignity of his fice and be a credit to the church which he now represents in this :ity. It was finally decided to purhase the Wyoming avenue home. The first floor contains large en- trance hall, drawing room, reception hall and office. The dining room. also on this floor, is oval in shape, having paneled walls and beamed ceiling. Back of this is the butler's pantry, nd _kitchen. The second floor is i reached by the broad stairway lead- ing from the reception hall. ilere is to be found three large bedrooms, all communicating, and two baths. The front bedroom is across the \Wwidth of the house and has a small dressing room and bath attached. Off this room is also a delightful sleeping porch. Across the entire rear of the house is the delightful study, containing about eight windows, large number of lights. fireplace, etc. The third floor contains three large bedrooms, ath, storage room to the rear. The cellar contains fireroom, maids’ rooms and bath, laundry, etc. The large de- garage to the rear of the room for several cars, are to be found servants' quarters of three rooms and bath. ‘The house and garage are construct- ed of brick. Baltimore Man Chairman. ‘The chairman of the committee on the purchase of the episcopal residence in Washington is John L. Alcock of Baltimore. Mr. Alcock is also presi- dent of the Area Council, which ex- ercises control over the affairs of the church in this section. The Washing- Rev. John R.
