Better the fate of the Galt horses. horrible as that seemed, than that of enduring in advancing age and waning strength the hardships im- posed upon them by calloused or ig- norant owners whose only purpese is to wring from them the last dollar's worth of toil. Some of them when ung were as proud and well cared for as the flour and feed hoi Better that their lives are shortened a bit by the killer than that they drop in harness, but despite this fact the sights of such wretched crea- tures as I have seen at one of the auction stables again and again are a disgrace to this Capital city. Passersby can at least do a bit In cold weather by observing if all horses are blanketed, having the cov- ering replaced if blown off, and re- questing that one be provided if there is_none. Then, too, this continued freezing weather is harder than ever on feline and canine alley waifs, and the spar- rows of the street. Put out the table scraps for the timid garbage pail tabby and pup, and crumbs for the hungry sparrows. Add a receptacle of warm water, if possible, for these creatures which are thirsty in cold as well as in warm weather. A fine lesson in humane education may fittingly bo taught here by im- pressing these suggestions upon the minds of children. They will be only L1 too glad to do their bits. Children {tiving in the suburbs will be especially linterested in feeding the birds for there will be many more kinds than the common sparrow and each Kind will need some special feed. This will [ stimulate the children to study the needs of their various guests, and in providing accordingly for them they will learn at their little bird shelves nature lessons first hand, more valu- {able than those taught from school books. They say their trade is dead; the autos knocked it silly and laid it in its bed. They go around com- plaining, they sadly gnash their hair. and wring their teeth, disdain- ing all goods but black despair. But Jimpson swings his hammer, and plies his rasp and file, and makes no doleful clamor,, but wears a pleasant smile. The outlook may seem phony for such a trade as his, but some one brings a pony, and still he keeps his biz. And some one brings a trotter, and some one brings a mule; and Jim, who's not a rotter, brings forth his shoeing tools; and some one brings a pacer, and some one brings a mare; Jim’s business is a facer for smiths who talk despair. There aren’'t many horses in this fair land of ours; they're lying where the gorse is, beneath the cauli- flowers. The hanks and other busses have knocked them all abeam, and now the farmer cusses a tractor, not a team.
