Special Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, December 13. — The Christmas trade of this section con- tinues to give every promise of ex- ceeding that of last year, but shop- pers are far more intent this season on making their money go far, rather than making it go fast. As a con- | sequence, the volume of business done in useful articles and clothing fis piling up. The increased orders for freight cars and other equipment by the railroads and the demand for tanks incident to the improvement in the ol trade has brought some en- couragement to the iron and steel men of this section. The Erie road is building seventy caboose cars in its Buffalo shops, the Chesapeake and Ohio has given orders for the repair of 200 composite cars, while the Sea- | board Air Line is preparing to repair more than a thousand cars. The advance in the prices of raw silk have not yet served to increase the volume of ‘sales of manutncluredl silks in this market to any mark degree. Dealing in cotton shirts i joverall fabrics shows decided improve- ment. Holiday orders have helped | out the cigar manufacturers, who are ! operating at a somewhat increased | rate of production, but the leaf to- bacco market is very quiet. The upward trend in copper contin- ues and window glass is in good de- mand and with prices lower. iSlow-Up in Pittsburgh Area for Year-End Inventories BY H. B. LAUFMAN. Special Dispatch to The Stas. PITTSBURGH. December 13.—Manu- facturirg plants in this section are beginning to slow down for the usual year-end inventory. There was con- siderable disappointment in this sec- tion when the unfilled tonnage report of the United States Steel Corpora- tion showed a small decrease for No- vember. It had been reported that in- ! coming business ip some lines was less than production, but it had been thought that the average was better than was indicated. However, current pay rolls are larger than those of Oc- tober, and this is helping to stimu- late retail trade, which has also been aided by a change in weather condl- tions. Chrlslmas trade is now pro- gressing at normal volume. Settlement of the bricklayers’ wage- | scale controversy is expected to result {in enlarged plans for spring building construction. A majority of the men of the building trades now have sign- ed agreements which give builders a basis_for cost calculations. Building permits issued last week totaled $223.- 702, as compared with $151,000 for the corresponding week last year. The movement of coal and coke in this section s slow, although there are about 1,000 more cope ovens now in operation than there were two months ago. Buyers in the St. Paul Area Complain of Limited Stocks BY L. S. McKENNA. Special Dispatch to The Star. ST. PAUL. December Both retail merchants and retail shop- pers are complaining throughout this section. The merchants complain that unless there is an eleventh-hour | rush of holiday trade. the volume of i Christmas buying will fall far below {that of last vear. The shoppers complain that the stocks of goods in the stores are smaller than ever before and afford no choice of sel- ection. It was hoped that the holi- | business would be large because savings deposits in this section are larger than they were a vear ago. and a large sum has been distributed in Christmas saving funds. Continuation of the strike at the | packing plants has resulted in increased prices for meat, all cufs having advanced 5 to 15 per cent, {while pork prices have increased {from 15 to 20 per cent. The local ipacking plants are operating at almost normal, as many workers re- {turned to -work when the state i troops took charge of the strike area. Building projects actually begun in Minnesota and the Dakdtas last { month exceeded those of November. {1220, by 55 per cent. Contracts |awarded for building totaled $4,- 701,000. Commodity Reports - Front Various Sections ‘Wool. BOSTON, December 13 (Special).: The wool market threatens to de- velop into a runaway affair, owing to the extension of the emergency tariff to February 1. There is an }actual shortage of some of the finer grades of wool and prices have ad- vanced in some cases as much as 30 per cent since last summer. It is practically impossible to import wool. Live Stock. EL PASO, December 13 (Special).— There have been heavy sales of sheep in this section in the last few days. Breeders have been accustomed to hold off until after the holidayps. It is re- ported that in one instance an in- dependent’s bid on a lot of pipe was 40 per cent under the United States Steel Corporation’s price. NEW CUMBERLAX cember 13 (Special).
