Special Dispateh to The Star. UPPER MARLBORO, Md., Decem- ber 3.—'"“Where are the ‘old-fashioned’ girls and boys? It may be that these shall lead us out of the nose-pow- dered maze into which we have wan- dered.” This statement is in an article on educational work in the News, the official paper of the Woman's Club of Melwood district. The article refers to the fact that three scholarships to Maryland colleges for Prince Georges county girls and boys are going beg- ging. and states, “The fact that noj ene has appliede for the scholarships given by the board of education to residents of Prince Georges county seems to indicate a condition of atrophy on the part of both parents and children as to the opportunities- to be found in higher edusation. Can 1t be the result of the inattention to the higher standard of living? Is it not time to take some step that will draw attentian to the existing apathy? “It is pitiful but true that our pres- ent low rank as a state in education- al matters must depend on the com- ing generwlion, and with them apa- thetic and receiving no encourage- ment from parents as to the sensible and practical completion of their ed- ucation in higher branches, it would seem necessary to send out of the state for teachiers—or, change our present educalional system. There seems no other way open.” 1 Urging higher education for county school children, the article points out that theie are many institutions in Maryland where a liberal education may be secured, and those parents who would he glad to send their chil- dren to college, normal school, etc., but who find it too expensive, are able to make arrangements whereby finan- % cial difficulties are removed. tof some new disease; | with all those symptoms sizzling Bed There’s nothing . like my downy couch,” there’s nothing like- the helpful hay; when there I soon forget the grouch that made me noxious through the day.
