The sonata Which he played is one of rare beauty, and the second movement is especially exquisite in theme and rhythm. both in the piano and the violin parts. Miss Schumann was generous and gracious in her encores. She has a voice of rare sweetness and great range, as any singer must have to sing Richard Strauss’ songs, which abound in the most surprising inter- vals and unexpected long jumps. Her voice is a singular mixture of the high, light soprano and a rich, sweet mezzo of color. Her phrasing and in- terpretations are delightful. The songs which seemed to win the great- est appreciation were the “Schlechtes ‘Wetter.” “Traum Durch Die Dam- merung,” the lovely “Wiegenleid,” which she had to repeat: “Ich Trage Meine Minne,” also repeated; “Freund- liche Vision,” repeated. and the fa- miliar “Staendchen.” The beauty of the piano parts of the Strauss songs enhance them greatly and as played by Dr. Strauss they were delizhtful.
