PLEAD FOR CONDEMNED PRISONERS IN DISTRICT ssured | Welfare Leaders Ask President to Grant Commutation to Life Terms in Four Cases. President Harding yesterday received a delegation of men and women rep- resenting various welfare organiza- tions in this city, who presented a petition asking for commutation to life imprisonment of four men await- ing execution within the next three weeks at the District jail. Tt also was urged in the petition that the District of lumbia be spared ‘“the revolting spettacle of an execution, at least during the sessions of the con- ference on the limitation of arma- ment, and that the spirit of good will which now pervades the city of ‘Washington may, through you, enter the death cells in the District of Co- lumbia.” Hope is expressed in the petition that durmg the present administra- tion the National Cdpital may be per- mitted to join the fifteen countries of the world, and the twelve states of the United States that have abol- ished capital pu In conclu- {sion, the pet penalty as punishment for crime is a barbaric custom of primitive man and does not deter crime, but rather causes human life to be held cheap- 1y by sanctioning legalized murder.” Those men whose, death sentences are asked to be commuted to life im- prisonment are John McHenry, Ed- ward Perrygo, Clang Sung Wan and Charles Price. Oliver Hoyem, Washington repre- sentative of the national committee on prisons and prison labor, headed the delegation. —_— Flowers—Loved the World Over. WALT MASON. (Copyright by George Matthew Adams.) —— WANT SENATE PROBE. Contractors Ask Review of Eastern High School Matter. Efforts to have a senatorial inves- tigation of the controversy between the Commissioners and the successful contractor on the one hand and the unsuccessful contractor on the other hand for the superstructure of the Eastern High School are being made | by representatives of the contractors. ! There is little probability that they will be successful in getting the Senate to look into the controversy. Senator Capper said that as the con- troversy _was _before the District courts, he could not see why the Senate should add this matter to its other investigation of the schools. —_— Everglades Limited Florida's new Limited, 1v. 9:30 a.m. Through sleepers to Jacksonville, Tampa, St. Petersburg, Miami.
