DENIED BY CAPTAIN Says Only Hanging at Camp Was for Brutal Murder of Military Policeman. By the Associated Press. CINCINNATI, Ohio, November 3.— Capt. W. M. Larner, Quartermaster Corps, Fort Thomas, K who was camp quartermaster at Gievres, France, ! v, and directed the erection of & scaffold | mentioned by Senator Thomas E. Wut-i son, Georgla, who told menrbers of lhe= , United States Senate® that twenty-one, soldiers were “hanged like dogs” from the gallows, last night issued a state-; b ment denying Senator Watson's claims. | He declared that but one man had been | exccuted at Gievres during the entire war and that man after a regularly con- | 8tituted court-martial. " “Senator Watson has been misled by persons who have permitted their imag- ination and craving for publicity to v overcome their better judgment and sincerity,” said Capt. Larner. Murderer Only Man Hung. “The scaffold at Gievres was_erected by me upon orders of Col. C. L. Sim- monds, jr., commander of the camp at Gievres, for the execution of one man, ; This man, who had and one man only. been in the Regular Army previous to the beginning of the world war, had been tried by court-martial and feund to be gullty of murder in the first de- ree. 7 The man had been arrested on a minor charge and, together with an- other prisoner, was being taken before a summary court. Under pretext of borrowing & match from the military police, the man seized the guard’s re- volver and shot the military policeman four times. Not satisfled with this, he hacked the body with a hatchet. The murder was brutal and in cold blood. “The man was lodged In the stock- ' ade at Gievres and he was tried by court-martial and found to be guilty. His case had suficient time to have been reviewed by the President. The murder was #0 brutal that the entire camp became incensed and it was with the utmost caution that the pris- - oner was taken to and from the stock- ade to the trial. Speaks With Authority. “As camp quartermaster, I was in a position to know how many men were executed there, for everything, from ~ . the building of the scaffold to the * making of the coffin, was under my direction_and was accomplished by men In the Quartermaster Corps. “In October, 1919, the camp was turned over to the French authorities. | Any number of pictures might have been taken of the scaffold since then and the scaffold may be in existence WATSON'S CHARGES now. “I feel it my duty to answer Sen- Says Senator’s Charges Are Pre- . posterous and Incredible. By the Associated Press. CLEVELAND, Ohio, November 3.— Charges of Senator Thomas Watson that American soldiers in France were hanged without trial and were subjected to barbarous ' were declared to be “preposterous and incredible” by Newton D. Baker, former Secretary of War, last night. “France was not a howling wilder- ness, but a civilized country,” Mr. said: “It was pretty well crowded with American men and women, who would have been quick to_report anything of this kind. “If .a_single American:soldier had been hanged without trial word of it would have come to this country and proper measures would have been taken. The senators entire charges are preposterous and incredible.” treatment A Big Value in a Handsome LIBRARY LAMP $]4-95 Has two lights and ss complete with silk cord THE_ Library Lamp _illus- trated has beauty of line and a refinement of design which make it suitable for any living room.
