POLI'S—Sir Harry Lauder. - ‘Twas a bonnie evening that Sir Harry Lauder and his entertainers furnished a big audience at Poll's Theater last evening. Agd as the hour grew late and the audlence kept in- sisting that, as one member of the audience shouted, it g@uld not get “too much of ‘a, good thl Sir Harry answered back, “Hoot men, have' ye no_haims to go to?” The Scotch comedian had occupled the stage for nearly an hour and a half, giving sketches of personalities to be found in the land of the thistle, mingling song and dance and dialogue in the inimitable way that-has ranked Sir Harry among tte leading laugh- provokers of the modern stage.. And the audience shofed that it agreed with him that it was “the end of a perfect day.” While laughter s the main object of this kilt-clad entertainer, his con- summate skill in the delineation of character was never better demon- strated than by the variety of types shown last night. His first appearance was as the light-hearted Scotchman ho has so often pictured, singing I Know ‘a Lassie Out in O-h-i-0.” In striking contrast was his portrayal of the sallor lad, wkth his rules for shore leave and his stage picture of the red-nosed, pipe-smoking old man with a cold, ‘'who_was thinking_and isinging of “When I Was Twenty-One.” Another of his fine characterizations is that of the half-witted boy, with his pockets filled with a miscellaneous collection of articles that only & boy could find of value. Each of the others, also, was a gem of character portrayal. In all the audience found a multitude of laughs. Yet Sir Harry seemed to show the effect of his war |{experience in a deeper and more sin- cere artistry. - The swinging melody which is a feature of all the songs the Scotch' comedian sings during his entertain-, ments made an appeal to his audience last night. and, on his invitation, it joined with him in singng the choruses of several. ‘Wrile Sir Harry's part of the enter- tainment occupies about half of the program, the other features do not partake of the Scotch flavor that have marked his other appearances in this country. F. KEITH'S—Sophie Tucker. 0ld father time Is certainly not on the visiting list of. Sophie Tucker, as {this star of jazz and ragtime never looked or sang better than last night, when she put over several new songs in her own original way, as the head- liner at Keith's this week. Miss || Tucker has become quite an actress {in characterizations. and she had th. {audience following her into the homes |land haunts of the people she sang about. Of course, her pleasing per- | sonality carries a sixteen-inch gun of reserve power, but she has been al- ways a star in syncopation, and to improve upon her original work dem- onstrates that she is the possessor of well stocked brains as well as a pleasing presence. Her program em- braced several mew songs, of which “My Mammy"” was the best. Its ren- dition placed Al Jolson in the also ran class. The five young men comprising the jazz band are clever in their way. but Miss Tucker stands out pre-emi- nently as the star of the program. Will Rogers, Shubert vaudeville star, showed—4 capacity audience at the ‘Belasco last night just how he used a rope ladder to climb to the heights of fame. While twirling and jumping and skipping about to the rhythm of his twin lariats, he ad- mitted with becoming bashfulne that he was “the homeliest man in the movies”; gave snapshot reminis- cences of his adventurgs in film, and, among other confldences, intimated that when he died e should have a statue of himself pointing strangers to where Mary Pickford lived. The audlence gave laughing evidence of its enjoyment and there were many recalls. = Another headline attraction —a distinction conferred by the au- lence—wus a travesty, ‘The Carni- in which Simeon Moore and Henry Regal did some entirely new and reckless ground and air tumbling, seasoned with boyish fun. Maurice Black, as the “ballyhoo,” also had his fun innings, and the three of them, to go back to the medieval drama, made the rafters ring. An- other place of honor was accorded to Nonette, who sang well, played the violin with real artistry and wore sumptuous.gostumes of gold and Jew- cled gauze> Her accompanist enter- tained at the piano. Holt and Rosedale, two handsome and beautifully gowned women, sang artistic melodies ‘with grand opera excellence, closing with -the prison number from “Faust” The Donald Sisters gave an exciting exhibit of hand and alr balancing, and Emily Darrell, in “Late for Rehearsal,” gave a_humorously eccentric_illustration of a young person explaining things to the orchestra leader. A mite of a dog served as excuse, and after a string. of foolishness, which the au- dience chuckled over, her little talk about what a dog meant to a lon some person called for genuine aj plause. Georgie Price improved on acquaintance that before he was through hé had added to his songs a hilarious Egyptian dance and bur- lesqued the Rogers rope-twirling that had gone before. Corinne Carbonne, with two assistants, presents an éxcellent musical number, for all’three voices are far above. the quality and range of the ordinary vaudeville concert artist. “Action,” the new first-run picture, featuring Ed' (Hoot) Gibson, the west- ern star, is an. interesting melodrama that fully justifies its title, for the ac- tion is probably without parallel on the screen. Mack Sennett’s new farce comedy, “Officer Cupid,” helps along the mersiment and, with the Intern: tional News pictures showing the ar- rival of distinguished representatives to the limitation of armaments conference, and minor films, completes an entertain- ing program. GAYETY—“Big Jamboree.” James E. Cooper’s offering at the Gayety this week, “The Big Jambo- is a mixture of songs, dances and nonsensical fun-making that was thoroughly enjoyed by last night's audience. Frank Hunter is the main attraction and his rough-and-tumble comedy causes many a laugh. Hunter is a comedlan who evidently has no ‘set method' of procedure, but takes [ advantage of numerous opportunities as they arrive, and many times puts over some impromptu stunts on_the other members of the cast. Last night he pulled one on himself when the revolver he was carrying unex- pectedly went off and started a fire in the blanket he wore. Frank Silk, although playing second to Hunter, is a comedian of the first rank and shares honors with the headliner in the applause. Mildred Holmes, Helen Andiews, Lelia Ricard and Anna Thornton add to the entertainment with songs and dances, and the Three Robbins, a trio composed of one fe- male and two male voices, dispensed good harmony. The chorus and scenery are all that is necessary to round out a good burlesque produc- tion. Grand Opera—“La Boheme.” The first performance of opera this season was given yesterday afternoon in the National Theater by the Scotti Grand Opera Company, composed of artists, chorus and orchestra from the Metropolitan company, in New iYork, which gave Puccini’s “La Boheme” before an audience that filled every seat and all available starding room. It was an audience, also, appreciative to the point of en- thusiasm. Applause began before the last note of each number died away, and, though there were no repetitions, the ‘performance was not over until 5 o'clock. The cast included Queena Mario as Mimi, who already has many friends in Washington, where she.has ap- peared in this and other roles with the San Carlo Opera Company in past seasons. The part is well suited to her lovely lyric voice and the dainti- ness of her style and personality, and ——————r No.wonder this sale has been going big—just a look at the styles afid price ex- plains it.
