Activities and Services UNDAY SCHOOLS Sunday School Lesson | STRONG DRINK IN A NA- ! | TION'S LIFE—fsaiah, 28.1-13. Golden Text.—Woe unto him | that giveth his neighbor drink.— I Hab., 2.15. BY REV. HUGH T. STEVENSON, Our world temperance Sunday study has been chosen from Isaiah's de- mand for prohibition as a national defense measure. The prophet saw in Ephriam, which name was frequently used in refer- ence to Israel, or the northern king- dom, the perniclous progressive char- acter of drink. He saw Samaria, “the proud crowd of the drunkard,” being not only punished but destroyed be- cause of its indulgence in strong drink. Isalah warned Jerusalem, whose nobles, given over to a life of ease and luxury, made light of the prophet’s prediction concerning the peril to Judah. They did not see how Jerusulem, being heavily forti- fied, need worry about the coming of Salamanaser 1V, who, When he learned of the treacherously secret compact that Hoshea, the king of Israel, had made with Egypt without his consent, determined to punish the northern kingdom, which was a tribu- tary nation to his empire. He planned to march into Palestine and capture Samaria, the capital of Israel, through a siege. Evidently the pcople of the north- ern kingdom had ceased being a na- tion of hardy agriculturists for some time, a8 Amos had warned “the nobles of Samaria, who recline on heds of ivory, feast sumptuously, sing 1d songs and drink wine in bow! against feeling “secure in the moun- tain of -Samaria.” The capital of Isracl that had been buiit on a soli- tary, round, terraced hill, devoted to wine culture. in the midst of a fertile valley, appeared with its ramparts to be difficult of capture. In their prosperity as a people they had not detected the decay and degeneracy of their life, which was due to drunk- enness -that' called forth Isaiah’s woe upon them. The prophe pictures the drunkards of Samaria reveling in their false security, reeling about in their pride, with a chaplet of flowers beginning to droop in the heated air, wreathed upon their flushed temples, uncon- scious of their coming doom. The deep moral degeneracy of Israel, which possessed a rich and fertile vi filled with natural beauty and glory is recorded in II Kings, 17.1- 1 were given over not oaly to luxury and drunkenness, but to the grossest forms of idolatry. The army of the Agsyrians was an “instrument in Jehovah's hand for fulfilling His word und bringing judgment upon Hi acksliding people,” whose drunke: had led them into sin. Griffit Thomas, in his analysis of this sec- tion of Isaiah, traces sin's progres- siveness through the abuse of their rivileges until it brought the drunk- ards to where in their cups they mocked God. The propiiet refers to the coming of the Asoyrians under a $hree-fold figure—"a tempest of hail” “a de- stroying storm” and a ‘“tempest of waters overflowing.” This had not obeyed God's word. pidity of their destruction Isaiah illus- trated Ly “the frst ripe fruits of y figs come sev- eral weeks before tie regular season in August.
