By the Assoclated Press. LONDON, October 28.—Prime Min- ister Lloyd George will confront the house of commons next Monday and ask for a mandate relative to the continuance of the negotiations be- tween delegates of the/ government and the dail eireann. Anouncement to this effect by the prime minister brought to a head the seemingly seri- ous situation which has developed during the past fortnight by the al- leged defection of unionist leaders and constituencles from support of the coalition government. Belief was expressed by newspapers here today that the government would receive a big majority in support of the policics It has followed relative to Ireland. and that the ministry's hands wouid be strengthened in deal- ing with the- Sinn Fein representa- tives. Premier In Congratulated. Mr. Lloyd George received congrat- ulatioms_from the liberal press for “grusping the nettle of the hard shell unionist opposition.” 1t was said the prime minister had “by calling ‘their Lluff knocked the wind out of the unionists, who were sponsors of the vbte of censure to the government,” h was read in the house on Wednesday. It was remarked by the London Times and some other journals, however, that the hostility toward the government was to be found in the constituencies rather than in parliament and assertion ntions from the voting next Mon would be almost as significant as hos- tile ballots. 1t was not eéxpecied that he vote adverse to the government would total more than fifty, and that all he conlition liberals and ainly would rally to the support of ti inet. The Times, while recognizing this faot, Jlaced emphasis upon the declaration at Bamonn De Valera's rppudiation Ity to the king had so stirred throughout the country that members of parliament belonging to that party who. were favorable to a ¢ inu- ition of the Irish conference were being pressed to dissociate from the govern- ment's policy.
