z o b b x -3 PARIS, September 26.—Not every gown has a wide girdle nor are they black, but when they omit the one and refuse to be the other they bave a way of making themselves ddifferent. ‘The gown without a girdle is spon- sored by many houses of importance. Callot and Molyneux have been show- ing many gowns that depend entirely ‘upon their drapery to define the hips, and Poiret shows so much contempt for the ubiquitous hip harness that he almost forgets to use it. He still .clings to the straight sweeping robe after the Venetian manner with the long _stovepipe sleeves of the doges, or the straight basque of another Italian period with circular skirts that fly around the insteps like hoops. It is well that several styles and silhouettes are advanced for the autumn, for as all women are not shaped alike, so should frocks be different. Cut in two by a conspicu- ous hip girdle, many middle-aged women would appear ridiculous. ' 1f they were dressed in the 1870 skating skirt which the French empress wore, or the hooped ball gown of tulle and handfuls of coral pink flowers such as the southerners wore at White Sulphur Springs and Saratoga be- fore the civil war, they would appear an age gone mad from the pursuit of youth. Happily. therefore, there are frocks which youth will not care to wear, ‘but which are eminently suitable for the figure that is no longer eellike or attenuated. And there are many such. The sketch shows such a gown. It is highly fashionable. but makes no pretense of aping the reigning silhouette. It is sponsored by great houses, therefore one need not feel out of the picture of the hour. N The fabric is dull blue cloth, that new supple weave of Rodier that is used to offset the wearying usage of crepe. It takes the place, also. of duvetyne. which is truly absent this season. There is enough dull green in the dye of this blue to give the designer a chance to put green em- ‘broidery on it. and the touch of black is a tribute to a dying fashion. The bias line is strong evidence of a new movement at which all the designers take a fling. There is a trick of surrounding the bateau neckline with a band of em- broidery and running a bias line be- low it ‘that stretches from shoulder to hip. In this gown the oblique treatment is more direct and con- tinues on the skirt which is formed in a manner frequently adopted. a tight underskirt, covered by the points of a long tunic. A large number of evening gowns are built with this pointed skirt over one with an even edge. There is not much effort to get two colors to. gether. nor even two fabrics. The past fashion of placing dark blue serge over a tight skirt of black €atin is not revived. One thing whic¢h seems to be quite true in this season’s clothes is that. nc matter how snugly the sleeve may fit the arm below. It shows no inten- tion of touching it above the elbow. ‘The larger the armhole the better. Better still if there is no armhole. It is rare that a sleeve touches the arm down its whole length. Usually it is square as a handkerchief, and often it is attached only at the upper part of the shoulder. leaving the rest of the armhole without a mission. The sleeve then hangs away from the body, caring not what it exposes. It is curious that with so much imagination expended on the arms this season there should be such a conspicuous absence of it in rela- tion to the neckline. Molyneux tries to vary the bateau decolletage for Efficient I Do You Know Pure Wool When You See It? The housewife, as the buyer of family supplies, should be able to te'l pure woolen cloth when she sees it. ®0 that she will not make the mistake of paying all-wool prices for a wool- and-cotton fabric. The demand for woolen cloth far exceeds the supply of mew wool, and for this reason there &'¥.-a:nv de- vices for making the supi¥e~yo 2 long way. One device Is to ireat the Burface of a wool-and-cotton mixture With acid or alkaline solutions, which soften the fibers and open the scales to such an extent that the fibers in- terlock more firmly than ever when dried; in this way the felting, or matting, quality of wool is much in- creased, thereby concealing a good deal of cotton under the surface. Another device for stretching the supply of new wool is the making of shoddy. Shoddy is a cloth made of the fibers of worn-out wool garments respun and woven over again. For wool fiber may be spun a second time +—fortunately for some of us who wish a secondary grade of woolen cloth at = reasonable figure. There are many purposes to which shoddy may be ut, where a pure woolen fabric would e an extravagance. When you sell your rags to the rragman’ they are next sold to a larger dealer, who cleans and sorts them and tears them to pieces, using A Superior Cold Cream. The cream that I talk abcut most often in this space is a cleansing cream made with mineral ofl and the usual wax and spermaceti. But there is another formula for a cold cream which is not only cleansing but flesh building as well. The formula is as follows: Fine Cold Crea Rosewater, four ounces; almond oil, four ounces; spermaceti, one ounce; white wax, one ounce; tincture of benzoin, one drachm. : This is made in the usual way. The white wax_ and spermaceti and the oil are melted together and the rose- Wwater and benzoin, slightly warmed, are added, the whole mass being Dbeaten up until it begins to turn creamy. Then pour it Off into jars. “Thirty grains of powdered borax may be added to the rosewater if you wish the cream to be whiter and slightly more astringent. Olive oil may be substituted for the almond oil if you prefer. This cream should be used if the akin is dry. Since it Is cleansing and also nourishing, it should also be used for_treating wrinkles. An ordinary cold cream is no good at all for this. The only effective way to use cold cream is to open the pores of the skin by holding cloths wrung from hot water over the face. The cream is then massaged In. and what remains on the surface of the skin is wiped off with a dry cloth. An ice rub or an astringent should be used after- ward. The combination of nourishing cream and an astringent is excellent for keeping the skin youthful. Mother.—Almost any hair\may be trained to curl, if the hair is not too coarse. As your little girl is so young, there s no reason why her hair will not train into finger curls, or fluffed by turning the ends into ringlets. Try the soft kid curlers to start the training and only curl the ends of the hair while you are keep- ing it bobbed. Peggy.—Drink plenty of milk to gain in welght and be liberal in using butter, or mayonnaise that .is made ith olive ofl. A tablespoonful of WOMAN’S PAGE " THE EVENING STAR, WASHINGTON, D.
