MARCH OF MINER . FEARED IN ILLINOIS ~“Men Preparing to Advance on; Two Towns—Citizens Taking Up Arms. By the Associated Press. ELIZABETHTOWN, Ill, September 8—Eight hundred miners from Ei- dorado and nearby coal fields are | encamped within thirty miles of this town, prepared to march on this city _ and Rosiclare, leaders of the men told an Associated Press correspondent ‘who located their camp. Reinforcements on the way from the coal fields will bring the invading army to more than 1,000 men, it was said. Depupy sheriffs and private detec- tives clashed with the outposts of the miners, who held up two_trucks and three men at the Hog Thief's ford on the Harrisburg road this after- noon. The miners retreated, leaving four prisoners and three automobiles in the officers’ hands. Mines Closed for Months. The difficulties in the southern Tilinois fluorspar _ district date back almost a vear to a strike called in the mines of the Fairview, Rosiclare and Hillside companies by the In- ternational Union of Mine, Mill and Smelter Workers. Local union officials claimed 914 members, but mine owners asserted they never employed more than 600 men in all three mines and that not more than 200 of these men joined the unions. Many of the unlon mem- bers, county officials said, were small hill farmers, ftshermen and mer- chants, who had joined the union to get the free rations issued weekly by the strike committee. Mine owners have not been attemnt- ing to operate for several months, saying the available supply of mined spar was sufficient for all demands up to next May. Eight Shot Last Week. Friction between strikers .and the mine guards resulted in a shooting at Rosiclare ten days ago. when eight persons were wounded. For 2 week the situation was quiet. but a few days ago women and children left or were driven from Rosiview, another town . in the district. Union officials s=id armed mine guards threatened the town, compelling the women to flee; county officials declared the flight was staged by union organizers to gain sympathy. Since then the situation has been growing more tense, without actual outbreak thus far. All available citi- zens of Rosiclare and Elizabeth are being armed to meet the miners, if they carry out their announced in- tention of attacking the two towns. THIRTY INJURED BY AUTO. HABEAS CORPUS HALTS REQUISITIONS FOR TWOC Easterday and Van Duzer Ea‘upe Transfer After Governors’ Demands Are Honored. Justice Hoehling, acting as chief Justice of the District Supreme Court, late yesterday afternoon honored a requisition of Gov. Ritchie of Mary- land for the return to Baltimore of Clarence C. Van Duzer, former rep- resentative in Congress from Nevada, who is charged with obtaining $250 from Charles W. Winters by alleged false pretenses. Before the marshal had surrendered Van Duzer to the agent of the state of Maryland At- torney T.
