INVESTIGATION STARTED to the increase in the tax rate last year from $1.50 to $1.95 per $100 of as- sessed value on real estate and tangi- ble personal property. The Increase in the tax rate had to be made by the Commissioners as a result of the action of Congress in ordering the District to meet 60 per cent of the annual appropriations in stead of 50 per cent, which had been the District’s share for many years. Real Estate Taxes. Real estate taxes paid last year amounted to $8,024,344.80. Of this amount $7,214,069.12 was on taxes for the current year, while the balance of approximately a million dollars was paid on tax bills that have been in ar- rears from preceding Years. .
