" 16 VIRGINIA DEMOCRATIC State Secretary Announces Choice of New Chairman Will Be Made on August 30. Special Dispatch to The Star. RICHMOND, Va., August 10.—Secre- tary Brenaman of the state demo- cratic commitee today announced that he would convene the state com- mittee here August 30 to elect a chairman. The district committees were told to complete their lists of vacancies forthwith. Many of the women named last vear failed to accept the places tendered them, and since that time there has been no occasion for a meeting and no attention has been paid to the matter. However, as there is to be a selection of a chair- man, and as there is to be a vigorous campaign and the women are to be called to take the stump for the party, they will receive all the at- tention and rights to which they are entitled. Interest centers now in the selec- tion of a chairman, and while there has been a demand that a man not holding any office shall be chosen, that demand is coming from those who did not hold the winning hand in the late primary. Names of many men have been mentioned for the honor, among them former Gov. Henry Carter Stuart of Russell, Wil liam T. Reed. cap st and busiz man of Richmon: William Wil- son Sale, who manag 4 the campaign of Senator Trinkle; Senator Harry F. Byrd of Winchester and Representa- tive H. D. Flood of the tenth district. r. Flood is expected to be the choice of the committee when it convenes. There are many reasons for this. He was one of the lieutenants, of the late Senator Thomas S. Martin, | Was a personal friend and adviser the late J. Taylor Ellyson, and also a friend of the late chairman. | Col. Rorer A. James. He will not have to be trained for the duties. \\hore:\sl many of those mentioned would be more or 1¢~= novices in the contest. FOUR IN FAMILY DROWN " TRYING T0 SAVE FIFTH, Father and Son Get Three Girls to Surface, But All Sink Together. OTTAWA, Ont, August 10.—In an unsuccessful attempt to save his nine- vear-old daughter Laura, Thomas! Toohey, aged fifty-five, and three other members of his family were drowned in Otter lake. The other victims included Ber: nard Toohey, ased twenty-seven: Kathleen Toohey, aged twenty-five, and Dorothy Toohey aged eleven. Laura. the youngest, waded beyond | her depth while bathing a few feet from shore. Kathleen and Dorothy, together with Miss Evelyn Broscher fo Toronto, wer ebathing nearby, and although neither could swim, all rushed to the youngster's assistance. Kathleen and Dorothy soon got be- vond their depth and sank, while Miss Broscher, who was close behind, re- turned to the shore and gave the alarm. Mr. Toohey and his son Bernard, who were near by, jumped into the water and swam to where the girls had disappeared. They succeeded in bringing them to the surface. but were unable to conduct them safely to the shallow waters, and all sank together. All of the bodies were re- covered later. @ —_— MARTINELLI AGAIN LOOMS | AS SUCCESSOR TO CARUSO No Definite Confirmation of Selec- tion, But Told to Take Care of Himself. By the Associated Press. BUENOS AIRES, August 8—Whils Giovanni Martinelli, who is the lead- ing tenor of the Buenos Aires opera season, has had no definite confirma- tion of his selection as the successor of Enrico Caruso as premier tenor of the Metropolitan Opera Company of New York. he told the Associated Press today he had received a cable- gram from Guilio Gatti-Casazza, gen- eral manager of the Metropolitan, advising him to “take care of your- self, as you will have a heavy load during the next Metropolitan sea- son.” Martinelli expects to sail for New York on_ September 2, after which he probably will go to Mexico City to sing in the centenary festival there in October. — NOMINATION IN DOUBT. Name of C. A. Ford on Ballots in Clarke County, Not in Warren. Special Dispatch to The Star. WINCHESTER, Va. August 10.— Whether Charles A. Ford of Warren county is the democratic nominee for house of delegates from the Clarke and Warren county districts is a question that has been raised in the two counties, tecause his name was not on the recent primary ballot used in Warren, although it appeared on the tickets used in Clarke county. ‘Word has come that the whole matter may be referred to the acting chairman of ‘the democratic state central com- mittee. Mr. Ford announced his candidacy last spring, and was to have been opposed for the nomination by John C. Lee, who, however, was run down and killed by a railroad ‘train. A few days later John H. Downing of Warren county, was mentioned as a candidate to take the place of Mr. Lee, but local committees held he could not announce his candi- dacy, subject to a democratic primary, &s the time for filing of petitions had expired, notwithstanding the death of Mr. Lee. Many polticians of a parliamentarian turn held that Mr. Lee's death auto- matically made Mr. Ford the nominee. The state clection law, it is said, re- quires the names of all candidates, wether opposed or not. to be printed on the primary ballots. This was done in Clarke county, but not in Warren county. It is reported a plan is afoot in War- ren county among anti-Ford politicians to put up a candidate in the general election and vote for him on the pre- text that they are not committed to ¥ord because no candidate for the house was on the primary ticket. Friends of Ford claim, howevér, that he received a “‘majority”” of the votes cast in Clarke, which is a part of the district, and that he is, therefore, the ‘regular” demo- cratic nominee. RAID STILLS ON ISLAND. 10,000 Gallons Mash and 400 Gal- lons Whisky Captured. MEMPHIS, Tenn., August 10.—In a raid on Presidents Tsland, in the Mis- sissippi river two miles below Mem- phis, federal prohibition agents de- stroved five illicit distilleries, 10,000 gallons of mash and approximately 400 gallons of moonshine whisky. As the prohibition agents, in a launch, approached the island two steam whistles, believed to have been from small steamboats in the river, sta- tioned as listening boats, gave warn- ing to the distillers, and the officers found the distilleries deserted. —_ GIRL SLAIN IN WOODS. Assaulted and Choked to Death in Alabama. CENTERVILLE, Ala., August 10.— ‘Wkile passing through a densely wooded section, one-half mile from Randolph, Ala., a fourteen-year-old white girl was criminally attacked and choked to death yesterday. Her nude body was found by a passer-by. A posse led by Sheriff Woods of Bibb county at an early hour Wednesday morning was scouring the woods for | ll the criminal. Bloodhounds secured the} fra , but lost it during the night. ’lllll .
