S. ‘Experiment Work. ’ Introduction in the United States of the chiaulmoogra tree to assure a per- manent supply of the oil for the treat- ment of leprosy is planned as a re- sult of a trip through Slam, Burma and Assam. by Prof. J. F. Rock, for- merly of the University of Hawali. &'rof. Rock has just returned to Washington, after an extensive ex- ploration into the jungles for the De- partment of Agriculture’s branch of foreign seed and plant introduction: *|He brought back with him several | specimens of, the “taraktogenos” tree, the seeds of which have been sent to various experiment stations of the de- partment in Florida, Maryland and California for germination. Results in Eight Years. Within elght years,_it is believed, nough fruit will be borne from these - |plants to initiate a domestic source of Bupply of chaulmoogra oil. With the possible exception of a man named Kerr, an amateur botan- ist, Prof Rock Is sald to be the first white man to invade the region of Siam where he obtained his speci- mens. Natives of that country for many years had visited the tarakto- genos forest to obtain enough of the oll to meet their domestic needs, but they made these trips only every three years, for fear of the beasts that in- habit’ the wild country. *While chaumoogra oil has been used scientifically for only a few years, Prof. Rock says the natives of that part of Asia which he visited have been using the curative prop- erties of the taraktogenos tree for hundreds of years, but in such a crude way as to be unable to derive its complete benefits. “In the Buddhist histories that date back 1,000 rs there are mentions Prof. Rock pointeq out, | “the crude oil of the tree was taken internally by the na- tives, and the legends say it was effective.” Selentific Experiments. It was not until 1899 that the seeds of the taraktogenos tree were isolated with success. This was done by Dr. Frederick B. Powers, now | connected with the Department of Agriculture here, after extensive sci- | entific experiments made in England, in 1856 had resulted in the discov- ery that the wrong tree was being used for extracting chaulmoogra oil. Application of results obtained in Dr. Powers' researches by Igr. A. L. Dean, president of the University of Hawaii, and others has led to a widespread use of the oy in lep- rosy cases. —_— ZIONIST DELEGATION CALLS ON PRESIDENT Thanks Mr. Harding in Name of lF the government ipaid off in Chinese money you'd have more to carry, but you ¢ould not buy any more with it.
