July 7. —Dr. Schmidt, president of the supreme court. in announcing the acquittal of Lieut. Gen. Karl Stenger of the charge of having ordered the execution of wounded French soldiers and prison- ers and the conviction of M Bruno Crusius _on the same de- clared that an experienced officer like Crusius should have known Gen. Stenger was incapable of giving such orders. Crusius was sentenced yes- terday to two years' and was deprived of the wear the German uniform future. “It has not been established that Stenger zave the order of which he 18 accused” said Dr. Schmidt, “the executions which undonbitdly o curred cannot be imputed to him. No eredence can be attached to the evi- dence of Kleinhaus and Oberdorft (two of the witnesses against the prisoners). rusius was not responsible for his actions August 284 owing to mental derangement. but Auzust 21 he knew quite well what he was doing. The actions of Crusius were due to megli- gence; he thought Stenger had given the order to finish off the wounded and prisoners. An experienced offi- cer ‘like himself, however. should have known Stenger was not capable of giving such an order.” During the course of the trial Dr. Sernau. an alienist, testified that Cru- sius had been sent home from the front a nervous wreck 1y had told him that “ lapse was chiefly due to the ghast scenes witnessed on the battlefield in- efdent to Gen. Stengel's order to shoot wounded men and prisoners.” BERLIN, July 7.—The Tageblatt says today that Lieut. on leaving the courtroom iSO me right in to the having ordered the shooting of wounded French soldiers and prison- ers. was hailed with loud cheers. Four Frenchmen who attended the trial in behalf of the French govern- ment, the newspaper asserts, were received with cries of “Shame.” TITLE CHANGES MADE.
